Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield (although only guesting) have done some good stuff recently with Down The Line, and I don't think they are has-beens yet, but this was pretty poor for some reason. Whether it's recurring characters or not, you expect it to be funny first time round at least.
I was really looking forward to watching HP (See what I did there !) but it was a real bore. They did the same sketch twice in the same programe, there was hardly any differences between the two. As many other peole have said, it is to 90's. That is the reason it was finished of in the first place and it was to old fashioned. They should always leave classics alone when they are finished. When they bring any classic back, the actors (or contestants) take the p*ss out of it (especialy on resurected gameshows). Sorry for swearing but they do.
Yes, he was the king of catchphrases and recurring characters, a trend seen in The Fast Show, Goodness Gracious Me and Little Britain, and this was his attempt to be more like NTNOCN, ABOFAL et al. And for me, it didn't work..
They were never going to 'change their spots' so to speak. The programme was always billed as a sketch show, it was always going to be a sketch show, so I'm not quite sure what on Earth you expected it to be.
I don't understand why you think Enfield and Whitehouse would ever be commissioned to produce something other than a format that has served both of them - and the BBC - so well in the past.

Well the format doesn't serve them well now. As has been said, it is too 1990s. By trying something different, Enfield and Whitehouse would at least be being a bit more experimental and risky and imaginative.
Sketch shows tend to fall into two categories: those reliant on recurring characters and catchphrases, and those that aren't. I wasn't sure what to expect from them. I assumed that they would be ditching old recurring characters and coming up with new ones, which they appear to be doing. I tuned in out of curiosity. I enjoy both types of sketch shows, but I do prefer ones which aren't reliant on recurring characters and catchphrases. I expected a sketch show, and I got a sketch show, albeit one that doesn't seem very funny to me.
This sketch show, if it continues this way in the next 5 weeks, will be of the same type as they did in the 1990s. OK, fair enough if that's what they prefer to do, but it just isn't as funny as their old show. It all depends on how the show pans out, and until then, I can't really comment fairly. Apologies if what I have said is confusing, but in a week or two, my opinion should be a lot clearer.
Didn't know anything about it. Until tuned in for Have I Got News For You and saw the trailer for it to follow afterwards....
Chums & Television Programme both of course modern classics, so really wanted this to be good, it wasn't. There always going to live in their former shadow that is just un-escapable. I just didn't really find it very funny keaped waiting for punch lines to gags before figuring it's a 'no punch lines' direction they are taking with it. Will watch again on merit , this is one that I think may start off rough but start to pick up speed after a few episodes perhaps. We'll see I'll give it another chance at least.
Minor praise, just nice to see them back. Other than that, every other sketch involved little more than slightly xenophobic and stereotypical gags and a couple others which felt embarrassing to watch, think they never seen Steve Jobs or something. Needs Charlie Higson I feel, won't sort out the major problems but would make it slightly more humorous.
