And observational comedy is back! Razz

What's everyone think? Is it dated, or am I laughing for the sake of Harry Enfield and Chums? Laughing

I think I am going to giggle more at 'Peep Show' later on. This isn't really getting many laughs from me... which is a shame really.

It is a shame as Harry & Paul are great comedians but it just doesn't seem to be making me laugh either. I think it has been based too much on the 90's series and not brought enough into modern times. Remember it is the sort of show that you would expect to be competing with Little Britain, Cathrine Tate etc and to me it just felt like it wasn't.

I really wanted it to be brilliant but it just didn't deliver the goods.

Watching the original Harry Enfield series, and Harry Enfield and Chums is a real joy - the longer sketches that have more than just a catchphrase (a trend Paul is partly responsible for with the Fast Show); this seemed to be a mix of both and just wasn't very funny.

It is possible to do more than a catchphrase based comedy - Mitchell and Webb shows that last year - but Harry and Paul just didn't.

I'll stay with it for the series, but I really hope it gets better.

It is very 90s I agree. I hope it improves. There were elements I still found funny but I think I was force hoping too much for the humour of Harry Enfield and Chums.

The computer geek bit and the Americans on the bus was funny - but again, its that observational comedy that has no purpose at this stage.

Agree completely. I think catchphrase comedy, while still oft-repeated across the country, is getting old again, and it needs to return to just sketch comedy with actual sketches, not recurring characters. Watching Monty Python's Flying Circus, Not The Nine O'Clock News and A Bit Of Fry And Laurie, they all do a much better job rather than just going "Am I bovvered?" or "I'm a lady!" or "Suit you, sir!" a million times. In fact, when I watched Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones with their Sketchbook show, having not seen the original material, a lot of that was still fresh and funny, even if it was the odd quick sight-gag or wordplay.

From what I heard, the BBC considered pulling it AFTER it had started promotion. That's how much confidence they had in it.

They should have done! We thought it was puerile and very disappointing but suffered through the first one; we’ll not bother with the rest of the series.
