I read the article on six-one news on Wikipedia, and I discovered that they air a one minute prayer segment before the news, because of Catholic traditions. I was wondering, for the Ireland members of this forum, is it still there, and have you seen it?

That would be the Angelus. Yes it is still there.

Now, I know this isn't the right place for requests, and that most people won't keep copies of it around to review, but does anyone have the Angelus footages?

Yes, it's still there. 'The Angelus' goes out on RTE Radio 1 and RTE ONE television at 6pm. The television version consists of shots of people pausing for reflection; this is accompanied by the angelus bells. On radio, you'll simply have the bells ringing out.

Up until the late 1990s, the television version of the Angelus had a still of a religious icon such as the Virgin Mary; there were no moving images.

I think the radio broadcast still starts at bang on 6pm. The TV version used to start at exactly 6pm but since the late 1990s it hasn't been just quite as punctual.

Well, do you have any copies of it lying around?

I do. Remind me about this later in January when I'm going through RTE material for the site. Unless someone else has the desire to upload something before this.

You should be able to catch the radio version by listening to the RTE Radio 1 stream on the RTE website: RTE.

Its' on at 12 noon on Radio 1 also.

Back when RTÉ One had a clock, they would use that to run into the Angelus, with an ident into the Six-One news. RTÉ One like most station hasn't had one in years (especially as the final clock, the 1995 one, had rather dodgy software - who could forget "and now with the time passing us by" from the late 1990s...)

I miss the clock before news on all stations - it seems the digital delay has spoiled any chances of a comeback Sad
Once we're all digital though, maybe it could be made one/two seconds fast?

Yes the Angelus has a 'new image' now as something of a 'moment of reflection' rather than a Catholic prayer. Indeed I wonder if it is even called the Angelus anymore - what's the official line by RTÉ?
In one set of images, the actor didn't show up on the day, so the director had to sit in - he's the one kneeling with his head bowed in a church pew Smile

The Angelus is either fiercely gaurded, hated, or just accepted by people. The vast majority it would seem support it - it's more a broadcasting tradition than anything else at this stage, including radio.

How old is the current Angelus film that RTE use?

I think the first time I saw it (via Tara) was back in 2000 and it hasn't been updated that noticeably so far.

They change them with the seasons, an independent production company, Kairos I think, makes them for RTE
