RTE Reception

It's all in the atmosphere... and the 2 channels have DOGs (October 2003)

This weeks RTE Guide also lists N2 programmes as "RTE Network 2", (and all the radio station listings are also prefaced by "RTE", even though I doubt the jingles have changed).

And lo and behold, when out and about in the car today, flicking through the radio channels, the RDS for '2fm' reverted to 'RTE 2fm'.

And may I add well done to Mike on the detailed and informative pages about the history of RTE logos/idents Smile

There are two more instalments to come. They'll follow next week hopefully...

The RTE reception from the fourth floor of the Art College in York Street is crystal clear. Still can't get RTE from the bottom of a hill near Lurgan though, although we could one night due to atmospheric conditions!

...More than UTV, anyway Smile

I'm not overly happy with the reception situation. However, it's better than nothing. RTE ONE and N2 may be available on NTL Digital...however, I'm happy to wait for their arrival on DSAT rather than go back to those buffoons.

As for UTV. Not worth wasting your breath on.

Hopefully, Gillian Porter will learn how to pronounce the word 'says' properly one of these days too.

Are there places in the UK where analogue/digital N. Ireland/Eire television signals are reliably available? How far do the signals go into the UK?

Mainly, as you would imagine, along the western coastline of GB Katherine. I think it's true to say that Wales gets the best reception of RTE TV. I haven't heard many reports of watchable RTE TV outside of Wales/SW England. RTE Radio carries a lot further inland.

The west of Scotland can also pick up N. Ireland TV and radio broadcasts.

And the news bulletins on 2FM have also been introduced as "RTE News on 2FM" for about the past month.

Indeed... the RDS for Radio 1, Lyric FM, and RnaG have also changed, they now read "RTE 1", "RTELYRIC", and "RTE RNAG" (Instead of "RADIO 1", "LYRIC FM", and "R NA G". In the RTE Guide, each station name is now prefaced by "RTE" also.

On Radio 1, what used to be introduced as "Radio 1 News" is now "RTE News on Radio 1", overnights the two services now link up (should have been done ages ago) and news is introduced simply as "RTE News". The "2FM News" name check has also been dropped and the regular "RTE News" name check is now used. (Sometimes, if the tape was badly edited, you would hear a reporter say something such as "Charlie Bird, RTE News, Charlie Bird, 2FM News" at the end of a reporter- the two name checks were recorded in succession and the editor would remove the wrong one for the bulliten).

Wonder what RnaG think of their service being branded as "RTE" - although they are legally part of RTE they were always run seperately and have a seperate advisory council (like TG4). There are however plans for TG4 to become seperate from RTE (legal authority provided for this in the Broadcasting Act 2001 - the relevant section was never commenced however), but no such plans for RnaG.

Yes indeed. Initially I thought all the emphasis on RTE was restricted to the news division. When they relaunched at the start of September, they renamed all their programmes:

=> The One O'Clock News became: RTE NEWS: One O'Clock
=> The Six-One news became: RTE NEWS: Six-One

...and so on...

A move very similar to that made by the BBC in 1999.

It's only a pity that the RTE NEWS graphics and set weren't more impressive. I'm sorry but I still think both are a disaster - particularly the set and that horrible horrible blue/red background.

However, I've always had a lot of time for RTE. Most people don't fully appreciate the wealth and quality of material produced within that building in Donnybrook.

Match it up against some of the garbage UTV produce. I could count the number of non-news programmes they produce on one hand. They are in a situation where they can concentrate their efforts on a small number of programmes...and still, they're trash.

BBC N. Ireland - I Fought The Law - FORGET IT!!

"BBC N. Ireland - I Fought The Law - FORGET IT!!"

Another insult to trash. Likewise "Country Cool".

According to a magazine, Alexandra Ford (also of Give My Head Peace and those annoying Electoral Register ads) is one of Northern Ireland's leading actresses - where is the opposition?

Oh yes, Joanne the Irish nanny in EastEnders and Laura from Hollyoaks, prime comparisons Smile

I noticed that yesterday as well.

If I turn my TV aerial round I can someties get RTE / TV3 etc crystal clear. Also I can pick up channels from as far as Northern Ireland e.g. UTV, C4 BBC NI.

Slightly OT; but it was mentioned that RTÉ News too got a new look on the 1st September apparently ditching the Satelltie dish look, though there haven't been any captures of the new look I was just watching a poor stream of The 9 O'Clock News from the RTÉ website and from what I saw it looks like that they seem to have copied the BBC News look from having a Newsroom in the background, but the desk looks like something you would have a Sunday Dinner at, but from what they had in the past it looks like a nice and better change for RTÉ.

I will probably add material from the new look to TV Room during the week.

There are no newsroom images within the set though. The streaming was obviously very poor.

Ah right, Thanks for clearing that up. And it was a very bad connection, no problem sound wise.
