Sky digital customers in Northern Ireland will be able to get RTE 1, RTE 2 and TG4 for the first time from next Monday.
All three channels will be on air by 11am on Monday, 18th April. TG4 will begin with a special edition of 'Cula'. The channels will occupy positions 267 (RTE One); 268 (RTE Two) and 269 (TG4) on the electronic programming guide ( EPG).
What ?? Blocking US programmes on RTE in the Republic !!!
Is this person for real....
Most U.S. programmes, are in fact shown on the RTE stations well in advance of them being shown on Channel 4, ITV etc.
Why they would be blocked for us viewers in the ROI is a mystery.
Get that person an atlas.... show him where the ROI and NI are...

I'm from Northern Ireland. Some US shows get shown on ROI even before sky, eg west wing, nip/tuck. perhaps this this the reason they would block them out. Also I believe the occasional live premiership games on RTE two on saturday afternoons would also be blocked.
Re-Read my post. The point I was making was as to why programmes from the U.S. would be blocked in the R.O.I, as RTE stands for Radio telifis Eireann... !
Radio Athlone... never heard of it. The first Radio station in the Republic was indeed 2RN. It later became radio Eireann, with a national transmitter based in Athlone.I am sure that Mr. Telifis or Con or indeed RDD can explain further

I believe this is a condition of sky carrying RTE on sky digital. They are hardly going to allow them to show the US programmes they make such a big deal of as being exclusive or first on sky before them, although maybe you will still be able to see them on analogue.
Interesting....
I've certainly heard rumours of this before in the RoI, but as I do not subscribe to Sky, nor have any intention of ever doing so, I haven't been able to confirm it as yet. There's a rationale behind it all right but one would also wonder if it's worth the bother for them?!
Anyone any idea how many subscribers Sky have in NI? Is it about the same as down south, roughly a quarter (350,000) of households? If so, it'd be around 120,000 extra households with access to RTÉ and TG4. Quite significant.
Wonder if Neilson's ratings and advertising rates etc will be adjusted at al...
