RTE ONE and RTE News have had new looks today, in what is a major improvement to the channel's presentation.
RTE ONE's new look again features live action idents. The new logo isn't very original - its just the RTE corporate logo with "ONE" after it in....yes. you've guessed it - Gill Sans!
The RTE news new look is a vast improvement from what I've seen so far. I haven't seen the opening titles yet, though they'll be on News On 2 (as News 2 has been retitled) at 11pm.
I must say I'm not keen on the revamped RTÉ News. They've gone for the modern "stand by plasma on top of wooden floor" look and I think it's a bit wishy washy. The titles are nice visually, but the last package of music they had was excellent - and the new package isn't a patch on that. Graphics are good, studio is OK but I prefer the old music.
As for RTÉ One, I can't comment because I haven't seen it - the screenshot you've taken looks nice but obviously it's difficult to judge on the basis of that! From the caps of the trailer, the RTÉ One look appears to be very nice.
Truly superb job from RTE ONE. Very nice idents on the theme Old Ireland vs Modern Ireland. Certainly puts the utter trash introduced by ITV 1 today to shame.
One thing that lets RTE ONE pres down badly at the moment - those damned picture rolls into/out of live broadcasts. Some very bad distortion into News broadcasts over the last few days. Come on RTE - in this day and age this type of thing should not be happening!!!
On the news changes - I'll reserve judgement. Not too keen on that rather cheap coloured backdrop which has the look of painted cardboard. That really does let the set down. Hopefully, they'll revisit that particular element. Like the new theme tune.

Not keen on the set either - from a guess, it seems to be the last set redressed with a much worse background - the old animated background was good.
Like the titles - they're rather different to most news bulittens, and definitely to anything RTE has ever done in the past. They seem to have incorporated a bit of the old fast-moving News 2 style into the new look, though this may have been a deliberate part of the design brief as News 2 has been re-incorporated into the RTE corporate look for the first time since the launch of the N2 branding in 1997. By the way, RTE News on 2 still has its own unique presentation style, in terms of the way its anchored - the sports is still done standing up, although Anthony Murnane now has to sit at the desk. Reports are still introduced in the more informal way. News on 2 gets also to run without an "RTE News" DOG (or window captions, for that matter), though the namecheck has been reinstated.
I also like the music, even though its a bit overdramatic. Was never keen on the 2000 music, it always seemed serious and poor compared to the 1997 music which I liked.
Oh, forgot to say, TV3 also managed to get itself a new look yesterday. New idents from what I've seen are quite wierd and live action, the female voice whispering "three" has been replaced by a male one.
Nothing much to write home about compared to the RTE ONE revamp though,
Now TG4 needs a rebrand...its' still using the 1999 set of idents.
Is it still the six:one news? I loved the bells at 1800 when I was in Ireland but please tell me they have updated the still picture they showed while we waited for the news.
And do they still have The Den on RTE?
So many memories come flooding back of watching RTE trying to opt in clean to a dirty feed of Ulster for Corrie etc.
When I was last in Ireland it was Den 2, on Net-2 for most of the day [it was the holidays, and they were miles ahead in Home and Away], and it was allright -- the presenters were pretty good, all in a 90s Children's BBC-style broom cupboard.
The Six One News on RTÉ One was *very* good, and benefitted from being an hour long. The Irish seem to be very keen on their sports, international and domestic and a lot of time was devoted to it. The style of the programme, the graphics and the reporting was excellent imo, and the bulletins throughout the day in Irish and signed with autocue subtitles showed what a 'main' tv channel should offer [*cough* no national signing on BBC ONE or TWO..]
The Angelus was on at 6pm, with a minute of the same clips each of the four times I've been -- woman buying flowers, man in wheelchair, man fixing car, stone figure from the famine, and then the junction into the news. Even if you're not religious [which I'm not, and of course Ireland chiefly is] it's still a junction at the peak of peak time to think about things outside of the box.
I liked the old set of idents on both One and 2, in fact most things on Irish tv as a whole -- apart from the early closedowns on most of the channels [until recently] to Irish Radio and Euronews -- for nocturnal people, this falls a little short of the mark. Shame, I don't really like the new RTÉ One stuff.

Hi NickyS and everyone,
Well, when the new look launched yesterday, there was a big promo, but that took it right to 6:01, so no bells (Angelus) yesterday. I didn't catch it this evening, so I presume their timing was wrong yesterday.
The Den is still on Network 2, new presenter, Francis Boylan Jnr, replaces Damien McCaul. Dustin and Socky are still there. http://www.rte.ie/tv/theden/ (although Damo is still there!)

Now when I was in Ireland I think it was just after Dempsey had left and a young guy called Ray (think his surname was Darcy but may be wrong) had taken over. Zig and Zag were still on there although they had just started becoming big on the BB so weren't on that much. And ofcourse Dustin was there. have a VHS of it somewhere must try and dig it out.
