Are TG4 preparing to switch to widescreen as well?
Their various DOGs seem to be smaller and further down the screen, and the weather is now broadcast in 14:9 with black horizontal bars top and bottom of the screen. EDIT: Also noticed later this evening that their IVC is also going out in the same format as weather bulletins.
Perhaps this may coincide with the RTE news/idents relaunch?

Well, with DTT anyway - yes they seem to be preparing. Apparently the DTT trial officially launches on Friday! Very hush hush

I won't post the password or username, but it's at the bottom of the PDF.

Thanks very much Telefis
I'm sure quite a few people on here could get access to the press section through their company names anyway

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. I've only seen bits if as it really is too god-awful to watch, but what little I've observed, the production is even worse than usual. That director is just appalling - so unbelievably lazy muck being churned out. And as for the audio, I know of sound recordists that are climbing the walls over the standard of all YAS productions - from levels, to noise, to distortion, to pace of music played, to your man Ronan Johnson or whoever he is - absolute muck.
It really is disgraceful the vast sums of money Shinawil have made from this programme having outputted so much sh*te over the past five years. Whilst their VTs and 'reports' are generally excellently made and shot - really good stuff from a production perspective - the live show has always been a disgrace. I don't know why RTÉ are just sitting back and taking it - perhaps because, assuming it's still who I think it is, the director is one of their own.
The director is one of their own, so the usual RTE rules apply !

The timing is always off on RTÉ One. The news at One is always too early, the Six One is usually on time and the Nine is always late! For example, it didn't start until 21.03 tonight. I know thats nit-picking but still - they should be able to have it spot on. And for some reason their programme 'Its My Party' never has the RTÉ ONE DOG. How strange is that! Is there any particular reason for this?
And don't get me started about Charity You're a Star. It has to be the worst programme I have ever seen on RTÉ. The production values are absolutely rock bottom and they always have been on You're a Star. I don't know who is to blame - RTÉ or ShinAwil but they really need to cop on. Who is responsible for the programme? How much involvement does ShinAwil have? For example - does the director belong to RTÉ or ShinAwil? Likewise for camerapersons? Where do they get them? You'd swear all they have to do is collect 50 crisp packets and become a director on an RTÉ show!

I saw Charity You're A Star last week and wasn't going to comment on it, but at least I know others feel the same way about it.
The Helix just looks dead, the lighting too awful and as to the camera direction, ick! It's like the director can't think of any other shots so he sends a steadicam walking over the stage zooming in on the singer!

And I don't know if its the director's policy or RTÉ's general policy, but dissolves are never used on YAS. Ever. Same thing with the Late Late and a few other shows as well. I remember during the Late Late Eurosong 2006 show, they obviously went to some trouble regarding the set and the perfectly 4:3 safe astons as well as the special Eurosong 2006 titles because the performance during the show was going to be used as the preview video for the winning song. The camerawork though on the songs themselves was absolutely diabolical. It always is on the Late Late. No dissolves and jumpy cuts every 2 seconds - zooming in and out and roundabout and the jib going up and down, way too fast and unbelievably jerky. Even on the winning song which was a slow ballad - the cameras were going at 200mph and cutting every 5 seconds with absolutely no dissolves whatsoever. Unbelievable. I was relieved when they filmed a promo video for the winning song. The thought of that other shoddy work being broadcast all over Europe was enough to make you sick!

Whats worse is that its not even a proper steadicam. Its only a hand-held. RTÉ never uses proper steadicams in its studio productions - only in sport such as football matches. The hand-held camerawork is atrocious. You can always see the 'steadicam' operator in shot either before or after the director cuts to them. For those of you who can't get RTÉ, if you want to see an example of the rubbish we have to put up with, there's a clip on YouTube of Sweden's Carola doing her Eurovision performance on the Late Late from about 5 or 6 months ago. Just type Eurovision and RTE and you should get it. But brace yourself before you watch it

Just seen One to Re-mem-brrr Brian Kennedy... and it was awful to say the least, worthy of the comments made over on the News thread before this thread was begun as an offshoot.
Also, spotted that TG4's coverage of the Northern Ireland Masters at the Waterfront on Belfast is being taken by Eurosport. So we have an Republic of Ireland-based television station (never mind the fact it's the Irish language television station!) providing Europe-wide coverage of a tournament located in the North of Ireland rather than the two stations based there... unless they are providing the OB facilities?
