Either way, I hope they start letting the idents play out for longer. The idents now all have a common tune which lasts about 5 seconds at the start but the announcers rarely wait for it to finish before they start talking. Some of them start as soon as the ident fades in and whilst there's nothing strictly wrong with this, the idents were obviously designed to be let play for a few seconds first. RTÉ Two is a bit better but thats because the announcers have no choice - the idents have a very definate beginning and then a 'separate' part for talking upon. The BBC always let the idents play out first for a good 5-10 seconds and it looks/sounds great. Thats the point of going to the bother of making idents! But on some occasions it can last a bit too long but I suppose you have to allow for opt-ins and outs etc. Anyway ... I wonder are they going to mess around with the RTÉ One logo - as in put the RTÉ above the One or something like that? I'd leave it the way it is really. It ties in nicely with the RTÉ Two logo as it is. And I hope they sort out the DOGs. They're really far too intrusive. They're massive! TG4 have the perfect DOG. If only RTÉ would do the same with theirs.

Does anybody have a clean recording of that 5 second theme tune. I like it.

Not me anyway - sorry.

Fully agreed about the playing of idents - the announcers never let the tune play the whole way through, and as you say often speak the whole way over it! There's no distinguished reflective pause with music as with the BBC and others - a great shame. The Giant's Causeway turning into George's Quay in Dublin is particularly atmospheric and worthy of being played fully in announcer silence. Of course the problem is that so much of RTÉ's prime time scheduling is off the wall as far as timing is concerned. By the time they get to news bulletins in particular, they're often over by a couple of minutes forcing the announcer to make a bad situation worse by speaking over the ident to claw back some seconds.

The only explanation for the repetitive use of the same idents is that a policy decision was made that only certain ones were 'suitable' for use before a news bulletin - fair enough, but there's loads that are suitable! In their final few weeks before being put to sleep, I'd like to see the old newspaper ones being used again. And the rest rotated so we get the daytime ones in prime time and vice versa. Of course this ought to have been done since day one, so little chance of it now!

The DOG issue is interesting alright - the current one is certainly way too big, and of course many people want it ditched altogether. We'll see what happens...

Here is a prime example of the overlapping:

I think the most atmospheric one is the spire one. It alsol ets the tune play out.http://thetvroom.com/video-8/BE-05-RTE1-ID-08.rm

May I just ask, what is the point in discussing about a relaunch, that is not due till next month!? Confused:

The timing is always off on RTÉ One. The news at One is always too early, the Six One is usually on time and the Nine is always late! For example, it didn't start until 21.03 tonight. I know thats nit-picking but still - they should be able to have it spot on. And for some reason their programme 'Its My Party' never has the RTÉ ONE DOG. How strange is that! Is there any particular reason for this?

And don't get me started about Charity You're a Star. It has to be the worst programme I have ever seen on RTÉ. The production values are absoultely rock bottom and they always have been on You're a Star. I don't know who is to blame - RTÉ or ShinAwil but they really need to cop on. Who is responsible for the programme? How much involvement does ShinAwil have? For example - does the director belong to RTÉ or ShinAwil? Likewise for camerapersons? Where do they get them? You'd swear all they have to do is collect 50 crisp packets and become a director on an RTÉ show!

Almost there now! =]

I can't understand why RTE must continue with such a programme as Your A Star. The idea has really expired and there is no alteration with the format really! At least with ITV, they got rid of Pop Idol and used The X Factor which has the different format such as the judges house bit.

And ever notice that they can't keep an audience calm. Before the results are read out all you can hear is mindless screaming! It is just unprofessional and annoying!

RTE are like desperate to fill the Helix, so ya kids and all can come in!! Dont think its the same with the X Factor?
They might be at least 14 or 16's and over?? I think I read that before?

That's right, minimum age for X Factor audience is officially 16 - I bet they have younger ones come in from the cold if they have places to fill though!

LOL Very Happy

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. I've only seen bits if as it really is too god-awful to watch, but what little I've observed, the production is even worse than usual. That director is just appalling - so unbelievably lazy muck being churned out. And as for the audio, I know of sound recordists that are climbing the walls over the standard of all YAS productions - from levels, to noise, to distortion, to pace of music played, to your man Ronan Johnson or whoever he is - absolute muck.
It really is disgraceful the vast sums of money Shinawil have made from this programme having outputted so much sh*te over the past five years. Whilst their VTs and 'reports' are generally excellently made and shot - really good stuff from a production perspective - the live show has always been a disgrace. I don't know why RTÉ are just sitting back and taking it - perhaps because, assuming it's still who I think it is, the director is one of their own.

Well the RTÉ Autumn Schedule was launched today amidst much fanfare and the usual pomp and ceremony. It's become an incredibly slick, corporate operation in recent years, with snazzy press packs, photo ops and extensive promotional videos compiled. You can view both the PDF and the full-scale video promotion (which will later be broken up for broadcast as 90-120sec segments) here:

http://www.rte.ie/tv/autumn2006/

It also gives you details of how to hack into the RTÉ Press Centre Very Happy - where there's lots of interesting photos and a couple of graphics, nearly all old however. In fact the photos of the Newsroom's staff, newscasters but especially correspondents, are absolutely woeful. Some look like they're holiday snaps, while some are so ancient that Paul Reynolds looks like he's 12!

Note the photos of the managerial board are brand new - they all look really good. A very slick affair altogether.
