With the relaunch of both RTÉ ONE and RTÉ News fast approcahing, we thought it was time to start a new thread about RTÉ. Up until now, everything from idents to the Late Late Show has been discussed in the RTÉ News thread in 'The Newsroom' but as you might imagine, that thread will inevitably get a bit too crowded when September comes. Hence this thread to help deal with the two relaunches. Of course, all kinds of discussions about Irish television are welcome in this thread - even if its not strictly related to RTÉ.

So, should the idents be uber-bland like itv b/c of Red Bee, or vry PC like BBC1. Also, Is it me, or are the current idents fine, except for the ones that were re-edited so they were random.I liked the old-new them. My favorite one isthe pillar morphing into the spire.

I thought as soon as I saw this thread posted that seamus84892894389498230984430 would reply. Looks like I was right.

As did I. Laughing What happened to him only posting in the RTE News thread? That seemed to last all of ten seconds.

Anyways back on topic, has Red Bee given a preview of the news package, and when would the new look be phased in? Also what about RTE One's revamp?

Well we don't have much to go on unfortunately. Its by no means certain that RTÉ News is being done by Red Bee - that is purely speculation. Here's the press release from Red Bee dated April 6th 2006:

www.redbeemedia.com posted:
Red Bee Media to Create New Identity for RTÉ One
Following a competitive pitch process, Red Bee Media (formerly BBC Broadcast) has been awarded the contract to create a new identity for RTÉ's flagship channel, RTÉ One. Red Bee Media will create a new onscreen identity for the Irish broadcaster that will include idents and a new onscreen presentation system that will launch towards the end of this year.

"We were impressed with Red Bee Media's ability to interpret the results of our audience segmentation study into creative ideas for RTÉ One's identity. Red Bee Media has moved on our branding strategy to the next level and we look forward to unveiling the results later this year," said Jim Booth, Head of Promotions, RTÉ Television.

"Red Bee's wide-ranging creative expertise–from designers and promo makers to producers and strategic planners–was brought together to present a strategic and creative solution for RTÉ One. We are delighted to have won the contract and look forward to working with the RTÉ team to create a fresh and meaningful identity for the channel," said Andy Bryant, Director, Creative at Red Bee Media.

I wonder what this new 'onscreen presentation system' means?

The new look for RTÉ One will almost certainly be launched on September 4th - along with the news. They usually relaunch on the first Monday of the month. I like the idents that they have now for RTÉ One but they use the same few constantly during prime time. They must have about 20 (or more) idents to choose from but yet they don't seem to want to use more than four or five of them. And then about 18 months after they were launched, they edited a lot of them and took out the best parts of them! But the rest of the current presentation has gone very stale. I'm surprised it went so out of date so quickly.

What perplexes me is that they moved the studio a little more then one month ahed of the relaunch.

I was hoping this thread would have been used to discuss more general aspects of RTE presentation rather than another opportunity to launch a tirade against Seamus...

I was forced to watch Charity Your A Star tonight
Noticed how bad the audio was
Maybe it was the TV but it was fine during the news before it

But anyway, awful audio [even if the acts were bad]. I found it awful how a programme went on for an hour with such a fault, and it not even being mentioned or fixed

Aha - so the new thread has arrived Smile

Presumably the 'onscreen presentation system' referred to is all of the pres graphics other than idents, which is just as important as the idents but often forgotton about. Everything from schedule listings to 'coming up' stings, to 'over on Two now' graphics, to trailer graphics etc etc. Tons of stuff.

What particularly excites me is the possibility of a new full-blown promo for the station - we haven't had one since 2000, other than the insignificant ident amalgam that was put together in 2003. It'd be very interesting to see how they'd promote their services in 2006, and where they'd place particular emphasis. Even if they don't do one, they still have to assemble an Autumn Schedule promo, or multiple ones, which in themselves are always good to watch and are generally well made.

I wonder how/when Presentation manage to install and trial run everything. Obviously the new material probably operates to the same technical specifications, and the same format as regards when it is played before and after progs etc, but one would assume updating servers/harddrives etc takes quite a while. Would the night before the relaunch be enough?

When TV3 got their new package, it took about a month for the changes to go in, as there was alot to do for on-screen including new equipment and loading / trialling bugs / straps.
