I'm not totally convinced that's true. I loved every minute of the Royle Family even though I'm from a relatively well-off family. I think it just reflects human nature and the family environment no matter what your social background. Everyone watches the telly and comments on it; everyone's mum cheats making the stuffing by adding Paxo, and everyone has a batty granny who gets things wrong - just ask Prince William!.
I loved every minute as does mostly everyone in my family. I'm from a 'middle class environment' lets say and its the little subtle things that are funniest and true to life. Also, if you can quote a comedy, it is a good comedy!
Also, about Early Doors, I don't think Caroline Aherne was involved with that at all. It was Craig Cash and Henry Normal with the script advice of Peter Kay.

If you've been brought up in some posh middle-class environment it's less likely you'll "get it"

I love the Royle Family ans have seen all the episodes on UKTV (in New Zealand) , unfortunately UKTV ran the entire run when it first aired in late 2003, then mid 2004 skipped the 2nd series but played the rest and have done the same just now in mid 2005. Annoying.
Hopefully its bought back, but I can't see it.

In the credits to Season One, it says "Thanks to...." and lists Peter Kay, as well as Ms Aherne. In the writers' commentary, Cash mentions that the role of Tanya, the barmaid, was originally to be written with Aherne in mind. However due to one reason or other, the part fell through.
Quick sidenote - I'd love to know what role Alexis Denisof (Wesley in Buffy and Angel) had in the original first series of the Royles - he's mentioned in the Thanks To... credit. I can't imagine there's two Alexis Denisofs.
