The National Anthem is still totally appropriate upon the death of the Monarch. I'm not sure what the precise terminology is, but the UK is based upon an immediate succession monarchy - therefore "The Queen is dead ... long live the King"!
Without a doubt all the main channels would cover it. 5 would go to sky, the beeb would have their own coverage, Itv likewise. The only doubt would be channel 4 due to resources.
These channels have rehearsed for years, the packages are all ready and set to go at a moments notice. So there would be no shortage of stuff to fill with. Then they have guests in the studio for an interview or over the phone.
"Now a look back on the second Elizabethan Age"...package
"Of course the early 90s was a pivotal moment in Elizabeth's Reign"..package
"The Death of Diana in 1997 shook the monarchy"....package
Blah Blah
Today on BBC One, ITV1, BBC News 24, Sky News as well as other news channels I expect they have continued coverage of the Memorial Service for Diana, Princess of Wales who died ten years ago today.
When she died she wasn't a member of the Royal Family as she had divorced Charles and therefore no longer a HRH.
Why can't broadcasters - an in fact, the general public - leave the memory of Diana alone. Let her family, ie Wills and Harry, respect their mother in their own way. Why do we need rolling news coverage?
Will we get a Memorial Service scheduled on national TV (and multi-channel) for the tenth anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II of Canada - The Queen Mother? I doubt it.
We don't get coverage of anniversaries of other Royal deaths, such as Queen Victoria, King George or Queen Elizabeth I.
That's my rant anyway - I know it's sad that Diana, Princess of Wales was killed at Pont Alma in Paris on 31st August 1997 and a lot of the UK (as well as the world) are upset about this, but do we need to be kept reminded about it?
Surely people should be allowed to mourne (?)/grieve in their own way?
