Ant and Dec on countdown would be dire. No offence to the two geordie lads, but it needs someone more high-brow than that.

I'd say get someone like Gordon Burns to do it. Either him or Jon Snow. AND KEEP CAROL! Very Happy

I have just read an story on him in the Sun today and says that he is "very frail" but manages to come out of bed and sit on a chair. It may will be a while yet before he comes back to his place under the big clock

You really are obsessed with death and other peoples health arent you!

Shame to hear the poor man is frail, it sounds worse than what was originally said about his health. Hope he makes a good recovery soon.

I can see Countdown taking a break when they run out of episodes, as he's still in Hospital and as it said it will be some time before it's back to normal.

They announced on tonight's Calendar that for the first time guest presenters will present Countdown during the next block of shows recorded this summer.

The guests arn't confirmed yet but will be stars that have been seen on Countdown before. So no doubt people who are regulars in Dictionary Corner.

It will be interesting to see who they will be having as Guest presenters, as you say there will probably be people from Dictionary corner, maybe....

Gyles Brandreth
Richard Stilgoe
Michael Aspel
Martin Jarvis
Nicholas Owen
Jimmy Carr............? (Yes that one was a joke, but he has been a DC guest)

Jimmy Carr may have been in Dictionary Corner but doesn't mean he was any good.

As for guests - I'm expecting to see the magician bloke, Geoffrey somebody. You know, the guy with glasses who used to be all over ITV ten years ago.

Other potential presenters:

Tom O'Connor.
The unfunny guy who never smiles, Richard somebody (not Whiteley!)
Suzie Dent. Practically lives in that corner, must be covered in cobwebs.

Geoffrey Durham is who you are referring to. He would be a good host, there'd be alot of magic tricks too.

Anyone also note that the guy who played Derek Wilton in Coronation Street is in DC this week?

Peter Baldwin?? Do you mean Derek Wilton? I haven't seen the show this week.

I reckon Gyles Brandreth is hot favourite to take Whiteley's place for a while.

Or even Peter Baldwin who played Derek Wilton! Wink Countdown without Richard will be very strange. Tom O'Conner is a quiz show master of course what with Name That Tune & Crosswits under his belt, he'd been good at it, although I do agree he's got very glum over the years.

Britain's cosiest TV quiz Countdown is to change format for the first time in its 23 years while its presenter Richard Whiteley recovers from pneumonia.

The 61-year-old who launched Channel 4 with the word game in November 1982 is making a steady but slow recovery in hospital at his native Bradford.

Channel 4 had hoped that he would be back in action with his sidekick Carol Vorderman before editions already in the can were used up. But the programme has only been pre-recorded up to the beginning of July.

In a move similar to the BBCs Have I Got News For You quiz, a range of guest presenters will now take over Whiteley's role
