I expect they'd axe it too - or do a "new quiz" with a slightly altered format like they did with Blind Date once Cilla left.

you sad, uncaring brat.
Actually I'm sure I remember reading about someone doing this a couple of years ago - and think it got a mention on the show.
As for a new quiz replacing it - that be risky. Beat the Nation didn't last long now did it.

God a lot of people here are oversensitive! I thought it was a very good question and one I'd wondered about before, though I'd focussed more on if he was ill for a while rather than dead.
As for the Countdown music as the curtains go together, I really don't see the problem with that. The great RW himself would probably find that very funny.
So if Mr Countdown is off for longer than they have programmes for, what will C4 do? Will they pull it for a few weeks or put in a guest presenter and if so who?
Carol could present the show on her own temporarily I suppose. She wouldn't have to dash back and forth, she could present from her stool.

I don't think Carol would ever do the show on her own.
You've made a valid point about people being oversensitive on the forum of late.

Oh for god's sake get a grip!! For a start, why should Mr Equi care about Whiteley? And for another thing why wouldn't he have it at his funeral? It would after all have been the major part of his life - the thing for which he would be most remembered.
Anyhew he's gonna last for years to come. He has one of the easiest jobs in the world after all: entertaining pensioners.
I reckon if he were to quit and Vorderman to follow suit, C4 would either bring in Richard and Judy or Jimmy Carr and Zippy from Rainbow.

Well Terry Wogan could fill in for a while - same kind of pensoner audience loving person.
I think he should go with the countdown music, just with the final note replaced with the Yorkshire Television fanfair.

For a start...
RAOTFIN!
To anyone seemingly 'offended' by this comment, I agree with 'Moz' and 'nodnirG kraM' - it's just a bit of black humour! Although I don't understand the people who are suggesting it might REALLY happen. That's even funnier!
The idea of Whitely leaving Countdown would be horrific, but I think Channel 4 would try to continue with it, at least for a while to see how it goes. You don't just can a show like that without a fight. (unless you're ITV of course).

Well they have to carry on at some point, IIRC Granada Yorkshire signed a contract with Channel 4 to carry on with the show until 2009, but if they happened to lose the show's biggest asset (no pun intended) then they probably wouldn't do it.
As reports over the last few days are saying, it's NOT life-threatening, he is stable and it is only pneumonia, which can be recovered from.

Not the most sensitive of titles - but it is a worthy question, though it's wise to remember his condition is stable.
As for Countdown, if Richard did have to pull out due to illness (or something worse) I think William G Stewart would almost certainly do the job on a short term basis as he is a regular host for Countdown specials.

That, and ferrets. He's often joked that the headline on his obituary will read "FERRET MAN DIES".
Anyway, I don't think the possibility of him dying is a problem, but it's possible he won't be available for the next block of filming (which will presumably be the series finals). Gyles Brandreth would make a good stand-in if necessary.
