Okay,so it's a bit early to be talking about these things but if I was his old boss i've gotta be thinking at this moment " who the hell takes over from the legend that is Twice Nightly ? "

Well,here's my suggestion - Rick Wakeman !

Well there was a topic on this forum about that very subject. Who was the popular choice on that one? I'm thinking Stilgoe might be the one to take over.

I'm wondering whether the show can continue without him. I think if anyone was to do it, Carol should.

Have Channel 4 made an announcement then?

Absolutely devastating news... I was first introduced to Countdown by my grandmother (also sadly no longer with us) who watched it religiously. Carol must be absolutely devastated. My condolences to her and everyone else who knew him.

The next series of Countdown with the guest presenters is due to start next Monday... of course, no announcement yet as to what Channel 4 plan to do... I'd expect an announcement either tomorrow or within the week.

Keep an eye on this website as well for any news.

the guy is one of my favourite celebs but he was only a quiz show host. You can't cancel every show because someone dies.

He'll go down nationally as "a quiz show host", but he did a lot of regional television, presented numerous programmes over the years, there was a time he was never off screen in the region, so he will be missed more here in Yorkshire.

Bloody Stilgoe - I still haven't forgiven him for Starlight Express.

But if continuity is live, as I assume it would be at this hour, it's nothing just to slip in a brief announcement.

I wouldn't. It's an awkward juxtaposition and would ruin the effect of the anno.

If you want a dry clinical death announcement then fine but what i'd expect is they'd want to pay tribute to him and they can't do that effectivly at such a junction.

and don't be over the top Jez - the guy is one of my favourite celebs but he was only a quiz show host. You can't cancel every show because someone dies.

Yes but he was one of the faces of Channel 4 and unlike others was there from the very beginning.

Well to be fair, the death of celebrities is usually a "and finally..." type news item, so the fact that he's getting a main news story on ITV News and on the news channels is more than what most celebs would get. Deservedly so of course.

Apparently,Carol Vordeman is devastated but can't talk right now because she's on the 'phone to her agent.

I also used to watch it at least every Thursday at my Grandpa's house (again, no longer here). Fantastic presenter, and I can't imagine how Carol, Richard's family, friends and coleagues at Channel 4 will be feeling right now.

is that a reply to the anno discussion or canecelling the film?

Thank you Stabby. As fabulous as Richard was he is getting a great amount of coverage. I'm sure amny of those whinging about this would be the same people moaning that coverage of the Jackson trial was innapropriate.

Indeed, his last appearance, if they continue to show it, which I expect they will, will be on Friday, of course back when that was recorded he wasn't even ill, and will have been laughing about being back on Monday and with a new series.

After that there will be guest hosted editions but of course they will have been made thinking Richard would be back, so these may need to be edited or scrapped

Well the end of the current series is this week, as they're showing the finals, whether Channel 4 will show the rest is probably being questioned, same with the episodes that have been pre-recorded to go out from a week tomorrow.
