This is pretty awful considering the guy has served the station for 23 years -- in fact he was the first face on Channel 4 in 1982. He always mentioned C4's birthday as well. A poor response to the death of a loyal presenter.
not at all. Taking into account the show that followed it's hardley the best moment to do it.

It is quite upsetting, especially for viewers from Yorkshire, who have watched Richard Whiteley for a long time, not just for Countdown, but the numerous shows he did for YTV over the years, this is very sad.

I don't know whether to shake my fist at Channel 4 right now or not! I think it would have been appropriate for a news report before the film From Hell.
Instead, just a tumbleweed ident.

Yorkshire Television made a good documentary a few years ago "Richard Whiteley: Television Man". I would hope this could be shown again, regionally if not nationally as a tribute.

I didn't, I said essentially. He was 61 which is quite old and died of a natural cause. This wasn't a Diana / Jill Dando type death.
Also it was announced he died. He probably died this morning but it's polite in such circumstances to make sure family members know first and so on therefore the term would be redundant
I don't know how to reply to that without insulting you so I'll be kind and stay silent.

I'm not sure you can say he died of old age! And he's a celebrity, so of course it's "Breaking News". Rightly or wrongly, that's how it'll be treated.

Neither of which suggest I thought that Richard Whiteley was "inconsiderate" for dying after Channel 4 News had finished!

Well God forbid that anything should get in the way of Big Brother.

Let's hope we also see something on Calendar tomorrow, this really is very sad news, especially for Bradfordians.

If Calendar do a massive tribute it seems a decent idea for the ITV News Channel to broadcast that nationally, as they have done previously with the Glasgow factory explosion (Scotland Today), and other similar big stories.
Have to say the ITV News Channel are doing a good job now - getting a lot of tributes by phone and giving Richard the sort of coverage he deserves. Sky and the BBC seem to be treating it as just another story, although Sky are now distracted by the breaking Diana story.
