Because the combination of numbers at the bottom of the screen takes up more room than the letters.

When 'Television Man' was first shown, Was it shown on national TV or just in the Yorkshire area

Initially only in the Yorkshire area until last week. When YTV showed a compilation of Richard Whiteley clips on the special Calendar tribute, you could half see the 'astons' that were shown on Television Man, meaning they'd just taken the clips from that programme. It's not that hard to delve into the archives and get the original, perhaps they weren't bothered.

How many TV ads has RW been in. I seem to remember a Chistmas Woolworths ad in which an lady with children came in a Woolies store to buy scrabble but they bought other things in the store so much they had forgotton it. At the end of the ad, The lady bumped into RW and when she looked at him, that was when she relised she had forgotton the scrabble making him speechless at the end of the ad.

Has anyone got that ad

Also, let's not forget when Richard co-presented a series of "Holiday: You Call The Shots" on BBC One with Trevor Nelson (the DJ bloke). I've looked through this thread and I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that yet.

I thought that was the best gig he ever did - a good bit of prime time on a trendy jet setting travel show - and it showed there was so much more to him than "that bloke behind that desk on Countdown".

I remember on Sunday 23rd of February 2003, Richard Whitely featured on Harry Hill's show (not TV Burp). In part one he was flying over Buckingham Palace and waving down to Jenny Bond (who was being played by Harry I think). In part two he landed on the news at ten desk and onto the floor when Harry was dressed as Sir Tevor Macdonald. Richard then got up, said good evening and walked off, leaving Trevor Stunned. It was hilarious I thought.

I've just remembered this, and it's returns me to my disbelief that he's gone.

As well as his Gotcha in Noel's House Party, I also remember seeing him gunged on one show.

PS. If any of the Big Brother housemates are fans of Countdoon I wonder how they would go when they leave the house since Richard is now in the land of nod.

It was about 1992 I think, but you're right, he did get gunged. It was when you voted for who you wanted gunging.

BBC News, West Yorkshire posted:
Whiteley memorial funds TV talent

People who want to make a career in television are to be helped by a scholarship set up in memory of Countdown presenter Richard Whiteley.
Whiteley, who spent most of his career in his native Yorkshire, died in Leeds last month aged 61.

Channel 4's Richard Whiteley Scholarship will be awarded each year to someone living in the region.

Worth nearly £11,000, it will fund training for someone who has the talent and ability to succeed in television.

Lasting tribute

The first scholarship will fund a place starting in October on a residential course in television production skills at the Artts Skillcentre at Bubwith near Selby which will also handle the application process.

Channel 4's chief executive Andy Duncan said: "We have created this scholarship as a lasting tribute, and I hope a fitting one, to Richard's memory.

"The scheme will provide practical support for emerging TV talent in Yorkshire, a region of which Richard was immensely proud and where, as we all know, he built his own TV career."

Whiteley's partner, Kathryn Apanowicz, said he was "a very hard working person" who would be thrilled with this tribute.

Countdown is made in Leeds for Channel 4 by ITV Yorkshire and was hosted by Whiteley from the first show in 1982 until his death.

A Very nice tribute to the man who liked Television and Yorkshire, nice to see Channel 4 also contributing to this scheme.

I agree - a very fitting tribute, and something Richard would have been proud to be involved in.

Today, I've just heard that a new presenter will take Richard's hot seat acording to Carol Vorderman. It's better if she did both roles to front the show as well as sorting out the numbers, letters and sums
