In the Sun TV Mag for 2-8th July, in the 'Heaven & Hell' section on page 31, Chris Jarvis is talking about what he does and doesn't like on TV. Countdown is classed as 'Rubbish telly', and it states:

Countdown- "Oh, my God. I don't find this funny or interesting. Why is it on telly? I'd rather put together an MDF wardrobe than watch it- and that's saying something!"

Fair enough if he doesn't like it, but surely this could have been edited out after what's happened?

Well considering those magazines are published the best part of two or three weeks ahead of the week they're going to be covering, it's going to be kind of hard to take it out after its been printed.

That'll be the problem. In Piers Morgan's book it refers to a situation right after Jill Dando died when the TV mag had an interview with her with the headline "I'm looking forward to a bright future". They had to pulp them all. These magazines are done way ahead of the rest of the paper. While in the Jill Dando case it would have been difficult to miss it, the Countdown reference could have been overlooked, or not judged to be worth taking such a drastic step.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but with no new episodes, Countdown seems to have been pulled from the schedules rather than airing repeat editions.

If it does return (and I think it should only return if it's in it for the long haul - with a permanent replacement) I can't see it being before the Autumn, probably not even till next year.

A few clips of Calander Countdown were shown on "It Shouldn't Happen To a Game Show Presenter" a few years ago. One of which featured Richard talking to a contestant about crosswords:

Richard: "And I understand that you're a very big crossword fan."
Contestant: "Yes indeed."
Richard: "And how many do you do each day?"
Contestant: "Compile or solve?"
Richard: "Well, I hope you have fun today."
It was moved to C4 in 1982.

Was it really? Thanks for that Rolling Eyes . Who's allowing this member to make these stupid posts? They all seem be be the same- crap. It's reminding me of Lee Bedwood & paulakin again.

RT cover from TV & Radio Bits

And there was an edition of the Radio Times (above) dated 24th-30th April 1999, talking about her new series The Antiques Detectives that was due to start that week. This would have come out on (probably) Tuesday 20th April. Jill died on April 26th that year.

Calendar Countdown was the original version that ran on Yorkshire TV (and Yorkshire TV ONLY)
for six weeks in the summer of 1982. It's always been Countdown on C4 since the Calendar
branding wouldn't make sense outside the Yorkshire region.

Any screengrabs or clips of this anywhere?

There was none on any tribute programme this week, whether Calendar or Channel 4, so I presume there is none

There are 7 editions of Calendar Countdown listed on the Granada Visual part of www.itnarchive.com. They are dated from 19th April to 31st May 1982. There is also a pilot edition with no date. I don't know if that's all that were made.

That was all they made for Calendar Countdown, as it was an experiment and about the 1000th Calendar spin-off in those days.

Why was the regional news programme called Calendar in the first place? And why take the title and stick it all over other programmes?

The coverage of YTV's transmission area possibly ruled out a geographically-related title for the programme given that it not only serves Yorkshire and Lincolnshire but also north Norfolk, north Nottinghamshire, north Derbyshire and even the part of Lancashire around Todmorden. Calendar is quite a strong brand with the viewers so it made sense to give its name to spin-off programmes such as Calendar Tuesday, Calendar People and of course Calendar Countdown.

The funeral of Richard Whiteley was held today. Family and friends were invited to the low key service. Calendar showed a short report and here are some images

Remember there will also be a public memorial service later in the year, no doubt held in Bradford or Leeds

Considering that they wanted to keep the Funeral very quiet, it was nice of them to allow Calendar to be there, though I can see why they want to keep the Funeral quiet, if it was public it would be like Princess Diana.
