I'd like to think some sort of announcement would be made on C4 this evening.

But Channel 4 News has finished for the evening.

Oh really? How inconsiderate of him to die out of the broadcasting hours of C4N.

You didn't perhaps consider a continuity announcement perhaps or a news report could occur did you? No, you clearly didn't.

Er, I think you're over-reacting, being over-sensitive and misunderstanding my post. I was simply offering the point that Channel 4 News is now off-air for Sunday evening. I'm guessing there will be few, if any, journalists in the newsroom, which may pose problems for C4 if they want to do a formal newsflash. If they do, it's likely that staff may have to be called back in.

I wasn't inferring in any way that it's "inconsiderate" of Richard Whiteley to die at any time. That suggestion is at best immature and at worst disrespectful.

Sad news. Very sad news.

As somebody has previously said, Countdown will never be the same again.

OMG_i don't believe it! I really thought he was going to pull through. I'm actually really upset...so sad. You're right tvarksouthwest, 61 is not old at all these days. Richard, you will definently be missed - I bet Carol Vorderman is devastated.
Who'll takeover Countdown then or will it even go on?

My news alert just flashed on my monitor I can't believe it. I was expecting him to make a recovery and go back to the show.

That's really depressing!! Live life people you don't know how long you've got.

RIP Richard Whiteley. Crying or Very sad

This is so sad. Richard was one of the few last remaining genuinely nice presenters. He never insulted his contestants to get laughs, he was a nice bloke. I really am saddened. One of the greats. No one could replace him on Countdown.

R.I.P Richard, you will be missed.

The presenter on the ITV news channel explained how his condition was slowly improving before it "significantly worsened" in the last few hours. She's right.

This is terrible news, they only updated viewers the other day on Calendar that he was recovering slowly in hospital.

If anyone provides fitting coverage, it should be Calendar. Spotlight dedicated almost a whole edition to Jill Dando's death.

Indeed I expect tommorow's Calendar to be dedicated to looking back at Richard Whiteley's career. Remember he presented Calendar for 27 years and will no doubt have worked or at least been in contact with almost everyone working for Yorkshire Television. I'm sure the ITV Yorkshire flag at Kirkstall Road will be at half mast tommorow. I expect a similar reaction on Look North as well. Look North's Christa Ackroyd presented Calendar with Richard for a good 6 years.

He was once refered to by someone as "Yorkshire Televison's ambassador to the rest of the UK", never failing to get his regional roots, mentioned in the interview, whatever the subject

When the Pope died, Channel 4 just played a continuous break bumber when The Games finished with the announcer letting us know the news. I guess they'll do the same for this.

Rest In Peace, Richard.

I can't believe Sky News or News 24 aren't reporting anything. It's big news!

I'm shocked. I knew he was ill, but I was sure he'd recover.

Certainly very sad news indeed.

News 24 just put it in the middle of their bottom of the hour news summary, not flagging it up as breaking news, just treating it as yet another news story for some reason.

well it's quite distasteful to flag a person's death from, essentially, old age as BREAKING NEWS. Personally I wouldn't even use the full height aston.

More the third - the original post reasd as "but the bulletin has finished" not "would ITN have enough C4 staff to do one"
