I thought it was nice that they played the C4 promo about how presenters wanted to be remembered when they died, and ended with Richard saying he wanted to be remembered as the first face on C4, just before the tribute program. I take it that they had planned to show this.

I expect it was engineered to be shown just before the tribute.

The only slightly poor bit was the announcer, pitty the other bloke wasn't on today

Yeah I noticed that, I was out for all three programmes, but I'm watching them on DVD now, nice to see they had the promo before Television man, good to also see a bit of his last Calendar too. The last bit of Television Man was quite depressing where they mentioned within a few years he lost his sister, mother and niece, with him being the only one left.

It's Gary Terzza who's been on most of the week at 3.15pm and used the same announcement on Wednesday and Thursday, in that he mentions that the episodes were recorded before his death and they maybe uncomfortable to watch.

Another highlight was seeing Richard hosting the YTV part of ITV Telethon '88.

Just had a quick run through both versions, the original was 51 mins long whereas today's Channel 4 version was 35 mins so a good chunk of stuff was edited out. Parts 3 & 4 was combined into a longer Part 3 that lasted almost half the total length in the Channel 4 version

Most of the stuff removed was bits where celebs like Rory Bremner and Terry Wogan were talking about him, also when they went in depth about Calendar and showed clips of Austin Mitchell wasn't really relevant to national viewers. Liz Dawn's "Richard Madeley" bit was removed as well, also remobed were bits where people were being critical of him and saying that he'd probably pass away during an edition of Countdown and you wouldn't notice, obviously only meant in a fun way in the first place anyway but a bit uneasy to watch now. A long winded bit where Chris Tarrant relived when Richard was Carol's phone-a-friend on WWTBAM was edited out, Chris did his entire bit in the style of WWTBAM with the questions on screen etc and it went of for ages so this section wasn't a great loss.

Plus of course with it being an edit it was now A Granada Yorkshire Production - Yorkshire Television Limited 2005.

Having said all this, I don't know why Channel 4 just didn't schedule an hour long slot, so viewers could have seen the full version and it would have saved people at YTV a lot of work

Just managed to watch all of 'Mr Countdown', though you could tell alot of the clips have been used before, especially from the 3000th episode documentary shown a few years ago, but they picked the good clips, the ones we remember aswell.

I also never recall half of the set falling off, such as the clip where the Conundrum flipped and two letters fell off, I remember the board for the Numbers round falling off once.

But towards the end it got more sad, especially with Carol saying why she wasn't sat the way she was, when Susie said that you'd expect him to be walking the corridors at YTV and Richard Digance's little poem too also made you think.

Nice way to fade out aswell, probably the last time we'll see the studio that brought us Countdown.

Another good memory is when he said he once got a letter addressed "Dick, England" and he was surprised it got to him

He also got ones "Dick Head, England" and "First Class Dick, England"

He was less surprised that they got to him! Laughing

The flag on top of Bradford City Hall is flying at half mast. I presume it's for Richard Whiteley

One possible solution if Countdown does come back would be to reverse the set so the presenters chair would now be where Dictionary Corner is now and vice versa. This would see the show as a new beginning.

Does anyone have some clips of Mr Countdown, for those of us who missed it?

I must say I thought that was an excellent touch.

That's how it used to be for the first few years of the show; Richard on our left, dictionary corner on our right. A decent suggestion though.

I remember a Channel Four link/ident from about ten years ago with Richard 'singing' the 'ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-da-da-da, boof!' from the clock music. Would have been nice to see that again!

I thought they might use that promo into either the final or "Mr Countdown", perhaps without an ident between. If anything, I was surprised they threw it away that early.

I don't remember that, but I do remember a "circles" ident with him holding a clock and saying "tick, tock, tick, tock". And of course the "lines" ones with him shouting out the wrong answers to "Fifteen-to-One".

Please forgive me if this has already been asked, but I read that countdown was originally titled calendar countdown. When was the title shortened?
