What is going to happen to this show my personel feeling are that Richard cant be replaced but the show should have a differnt guest presneter each week (in the style of HIGNFY) and they should make all future shows in Richards memery, one problem is that Carol understandlbey wont want to stay on in her role i dont think.
I also think if Channel 4 Decide to make shows with guest presenters now untill they are made classic eposode of countdown should be shown. well they are my opoins any way i under stand a lot will want the show to be rested for a VERY long time before any think new is done to it if a toll.
Edited: as i felt the comments made were out of place in this thread as it is about the said death of Richard and it would be wrong to couse other isues and arguemant in such a thread
I started up a new topic on whats next for the format becuse imo it was more approtie but Instine what ever he called decided he didnt like it and thats why this forum lacks behinds other such as the world class digital spy any way above was what i wrote
I that suggest you confine yourself to Digital Spy in future if you hold it in such high esteem.
That would be similar to the French version of Countdown, shown daily on TV5 Europe at 12.30pm, where all of the letters and numbers are chosen by computer, with a more modern look, with computers being the norm.
And that is the way for Countdown to go if all agree on the shows production team to go on without 'the gaffer'. If Carol is host then she can double up as the maths brain and leave the words to those in dictionary corner, use computers for the numbers and letters generating, and use a 'in the round' set like the French one.
I once had a run-in on here with the shows former warm-up man, and I complained that at the time, Countdown had become less of a gameshow and more of an extension of Richards ego. I made the point that the French host - France 2's breakfast show weatherman - managed to get the roughly the same amount of rounds in his show in 15 mins less time, rather than bogging the pace down with giggles and puns. Greg said the puns and waffle is of course one of the main reasons why most people watched Countdown, which I fully respected.
If you are going to do the show like the French version, then you need to do away with the oversized magnetic scrabble and numbers and introduce computers into the set (In France the contestants use a touchscreen monitor built into the desk to 'store' the words and is also used to display the workings in the numbers round.) The advantage of computers is that assuming Carol takes over as host, she can free herself from the letters/numbers boards and wander around the set and occasionally head off into the audience (the audience in France are seated in a semi-circle around the contestants and hosts, and often get asked how they are going playing along with the show)
Change the look of the set to a warm frosted glass and wood setting, and either use some other graphical device for the clock - a digital clock on a dot matrix l.e.d, or have a smaller clock on a raised slope angle on the floor infront of the contestants.
Major changes I know, but if the show is to continue then this is what it needs - and yes, I would rename 'Dictionary Corner' to 'Whiteley's Dictionary Corner' on the new set.
Maybe the final prize can be named after Richard, but theres no need to go about renaming parts of the set just for the sake of it. People realise he is dead, and will miss him, but they dont need to be reminded of it at every single opportunity in every episode, should any more ever be filmed.

Though the final prize is the complete OED, so I'm not sure how that would work. They'd probably have to add a trophy as well and call the "Whiteley Cup" or something. That would probably work better for the Champion-of-Champions series.
Never mind confining ourselves to Countdown - people often forget about Richard's vast popularity in the Yorkshire region, though it has been mentioned frequently in recent days.
Hence - we're all forgetting the most obvious form of tribute - Rename Yorkshire TV building in Leeds after him, thereby providing the broadest form of tribute possible. Also, if the programme continues, the presenter can always say: "If you're interested in becoming a contestant write to: Countdown, Whiteley Studios, Leeds" etc. I'm surprised no-one has suggested that.
