Just caught the BBC2 CA apologising for the channel not being able to bring tonight's Review Show to air. Any ideas what's happened?

I notice Kirsty Wark, who presented tonight's Newsnight, was also pencilled in to be presenting The Review Show, if my EPG info's correct. Wonder if she had to stand in as Newsnight presenter at the last minute, leaving TRS without a presenter?

Missed the end of Newsnight so don't know if it was mentioned there. Natural World is airing in its place.

Surely they could have brought another presenter in to host either. Also, given TRS is in Scotland (Edinbugh or Glasgow?) and Newsnight is in TVC, I doubt it was a 'last minute' change.

Hmm - TRS comes from Pacific Quay in Glasgow usually.

It isn't unheard of (though very unusual) for a presenter to be double-booked without realising it - and in some cases the first it is realised this is the case is when they don't turn up.

However I would expect TRS to be having discussions with their presenter during the week on the content of the show - so I doubt that is the case this time. It could be anything from a technical failure (loss of matrix, sound desk or server playout system could mean a show couldn't broadcast) to a fire alarm causing an evacuation of the building

Apparently it went out in Northern Ireland only and won't be available on the IPlayer. Odd...

I take it you're going by this page? I think that's a red herring, as the BBC Two NI Analogue schedule pages seems to be sort of abandoned these days.

The description for last night's show:
Quote:
A Review Show special surveys the state of British TV in the wake of some of its greatest ever upheavals. Kirsty Wark is joined by guests Peter Bazalgette, Stephen Armstrong, Daisy Goodwin and Heather Croall to ask just what's been happening to TV in the last year, and just what the future might look like for the gogglebox.
makes it sound an awful lot like a prerecorded episode. Perhaps someone lost the tape?

Jools did go out, but a few minutes later than billed.

I Googled "The Review Show" and got this page:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qcp6t

It would definitely seem odd for the show to have been broadcast in Northern Ireland only, so maybe this page is a bit of a red herring.

There's something very odd here. The Review Show is usually topical, so will be a late (ish) edit, so should have a proper standby against it. This particular episode was an end of year style review of the year, so probably has been in the can for a while.

You have to wonder why the standby which the regular episodes presumably have wasn't used, which implies it was a late decision to pull the episode and they couldn't get the standby set up in time as it wasn't expected to be needed.

How do you know the stand-by programme wasn't used? Couldn't Natural World have been the stand-by programme?

Here is what we know...
http://twitter.com/#!/bbcreviewshow - The Review Show have a twitter feed but don't seem to update it, although this does confirm that it is recorded/broadcast from Glasgow.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b010vysz - Out of the listed contributors, at least Daisy Goodwin has a Twitter account - http://twitter.com/#!/daisygoodwinuk/status/64004838098350080 she mentions that she is going to be on Newsnight Review that evening, but has made no reference since to the programme at all. This makes me think it may have been a recorded programme and she may not even be aware that it didn't go out.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b010v8jb/?t=31m49s - There was no mention of The Review Show at the end of that evenings Newsnight.

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1468913 - This DigitalSpy thread has no answers either.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Review_Show - Wikipedia reports the probably erroneous information that this edition was only broadcast in Northern Ireland.

I've just realised my post adds nothing. Sorry about that.

It's normally live from Glasgow.

That's a fair bet.

I think, even if that were true, it's not notable enough to be in a Wikipedia article. I think I'll remove it...

My (slightly informed) guess is that there was a minor planning cock-up, and pres didn't know that there wasn't a live show. It's happened before, with Andrew Marr.

And I should emphasise that 'pres' in this contact = presentation (i.e. the playout and/or scheduling teams) not presenter.

I'd have expected it to be something more similar to the scheduled programme. A Natural History doc isn't that similar to an arts discussion, so you would expect there to be a nominated arts based programme down as standby for the live programmes. Something like a highlights package from previous episodes/series, or a re-run of a long form special interview, or something from a vaguely related series like The Culture Show, The Proms etc
