I've actually always quite liked the 12 Yard approach of talking through the answers as I'm interested to know if the players thought processes arriving at the answer are similar to my own, it can seem a bit forced sometime though.

The thought process is good in the respect that too often people on quiz shows just say 'dunno' without thinking. However it does give the idea that no-one knows anything for sake of it, if you know something just say the answer!

But then you'd need more questions and that would cost more money...

Is that really the reason some shows don't have more questions?

I doubt it.

I might be mistaken, but I believe freelance question writers on smaller shows are paid per question.

But I'm sure they could have made the budget stretch to more questions, if that was the format otherwise 15-1 would have struggled to get recommissioned.

Interesting quote from Jeremy Vine. http://uk.tv.yahoo.com/fans-want-eggheads-fail-051119366.htmlI

It'll be interesting how much like The Chase this turns out to be. I guess both shows are produced by ITV companies these days but I'm sure there be enough elements to make them different.

The Chasers are likeable - that's a key difference.

Well that wouldn't stand up in court.

Surely having someone who is genuinely unlikeable is in some respects what these shows need.

One of Channel 5's longest running gameshows featured a convicted murderer as the villain, no one complained!

15-to-1 will have had dedicated question setters, I would have said. But as I say, I don't know enough about the issue to comment fully.

The original Eggheads and The Chase have similar bases, but one is not a direct copy of the other. The latter vastly improved upon the former, so when the former spins off a more direct copy of the latter, it's still going to irk people, no matter how much Jeremy Vine tries to explain it away.

The key word there is "villain". And maybe Channel 5.

Yep, it's a poor attempt at being The Chase, but devoid of any fun.

Certainly better than Eggheads even if that is just because it has more (and I would say better) questions per episode. I think the format could work well if it was played faster. I would change it by adding more contestants and having them lose money rather than just a life when they get a question wrong, that should keep the costs about the same. I would also remove the bit where they walk to the hot spot, why do they need to move for one question? It's just more time wasting.

The end game is the reverse of the Final Chase, without the speed.

I don't think the first half was any more derivative of The Chase than the Eggheads was of The Chase. The end game was clearly inspired by the Final Chase, but without the excitement the speed gives.
