Return to... Airport
Mon 14 Jul, 7:30 pm - 8:00 pm 30mins

A look back at the popular fly-on-the-tarmac series about what was then the world's biggest airport, London Heathrow.

Twelve years after the show took off, Airport's flamboyant Aeroflot supervisor Jeremy Spake and other Heathrow characters reflect on the heady mix of minor celebrity status, near-catastrophe and bags of confusion that created a television sensation which changed their lives.

I've got to say, i'm rather exited by this - i remember watching this when i was about 5.. and the repeats on Dave and Dave +1 are nostalgia o vision for me.

Can anybody else shed some light on this.. ?

I notice the other night BBC2 showed Return to Vets in Practice as well although I think that was a repeat.

It's great they're doing this I agree. It's about 10 years since all channels started a boom in these fly-on-the-wall docs mainly due to Maureen Rees in Driving School which set off the trend in a way. Of course ITV's version, Airline is still going and I think it's the only type of this genre that is.

It'll be interesting to see what Jeremy Spake's doing these days. He tried to carve a TV Presenting career out of it at the time but it'd be ironic if he's returned to Airport.

Of course it's these type of shows that gave the country Peter Kay: "I don't care whose it is... it's FLOATING!" Very Happy

He was featured on C4's How TV Changed Britain a few weeks back, as it happens I think its a business man working in Russia or some obscure country which he spoke the language. I agree should be a interesting programme, very nostalgic when you watch the repeats of Heathrow at Christmas etc. Hard to believe it was shown on primetime saturday nights, where now reality shows air.

There's still a few dotted around - including one this week about people investigating benefits fraud, and that one about the police narrated by Jamie Theakston

True, but I reckon they've got far more about serious events as opposed to "ooh look there's Jeremy randomly dancing" etc. I'm probably wrong, but I suppose this is what happens when Big Brother takes over. Reality TV (ala Big Brother, I'm a Celeb, Hells Kitchen) takes away a lot of those simple elements - do you know what I mean? Confused

Yes, but that qualifies more as a Police, Stop, Crash, Camera, Accident, Kill programme. They tend not to concentrate on how many times PC John Smith has been divorced, or whether or not he's having problems with his girlfriend's birthmark.

My all time favourite was The Cruise. I wish they'd do a follow up documentary for that one.

Judging by the title sequence to the Vets in Practice programme on Friday, they will be doing the Cruise too.

Yes, the current crop don't focus on individuals so much - there's no stars made these days. It does look unlikely that there'll t be another Jeremy Spake, Mauren Rees or Trudie Mostue

Looks like this is a mini-series, with five episodes. That's according to tvtv.co.uk anyway.

Except for viewers in Scotland it would seem. I can't see the dates listed anywhere for BBC TWO Scotland viewers. We've got University Challenge in the 7.30pm slot - and the same on my Virgin TV EPG.

I know that Jeremy Spake was seeking to re-enter the aviation world at Heathrow a few years back and was (rumoured to be) planning to join a major Middle East airline (beginning with the letter "Q") as their London supremo.

However, it never happened, for various reasons.
