I'd love to see another UKTV channel, something like UK Horizons? But honestly I don't really expect it, they're having trouble enough filling the other slots as it is.
Remember, of course, that E4 wouldn't replace Tv travelshop, it's go on the mux owned by Channel 3 and 4. The space is owned by SDN - whose track record has earnt them the nickname 'Shopping Disaster Netork.'

I would love to see a golden oldie channel (Plus or UK Gold) or Boomerang, but there is absolutely no chance that these channels would ever broadcast free-to-air on Freeview. Whoever takes over the Channel 17 slot, I hope they provide something that is much more watchable than FTN.

I think there's a chance UK Gold be FTA eventually, and probably the only thing stopping them is that they're tied up in a contract with Sky and the cable companies so they can't become a FTA channel for the forseeable future.
Financialy though, I'm sure it would make sense for them to do so as the potential ad revenue on Freeview could outweigh any subscription income as it would be one of the most watched channels. Five is currently the third most watched channel in digital homes, but UK Gold could possibly overtake them.

The answer to what will replace it is obvious.....
*The TVTS airspace is Channel 5s, the contract with five has ended and not been renewed.
*The Guardian had an article on Monday about five starting new interactive services for which they have purchased bandwidth (presumably this refers to Sky)
* And very soon fives foray into reality TV starts with 'Back to Reality'
....So my guess is that it will be used as the 'interactive' stream initially for 'Back to Reality' and then for whatever else they want to use it for
