The classic 1970s children's programmes Rentaghost and Worzel Gummidge look set to make a comeback, after RDF Media, the independent production company behind Wife Swap, licensed the rights to remake both shows.

RDF has reached a licensing deal with the Los Angeles-based intellectual property development company Pidgeon Entertainment to develop, produce and distribute the shows in the UK and internationally.

"We feel there is real potential for these classic brands to be reworked for a modern-day audience and are very excited to be working with Patrick [Pidgeon, founder of Pidgeon Entertainment] to take them forward," said Nigel Pickard, the director of family entertainment at RDF.

Rentaghost, which was written by Bob Block, ran on the BBC for nine years from 1975 to 1984, with some of its nearly 60 episodes periodically rebroadcast over the past 15 years on CBBC.

The plot of the programme focused on a group of ghosts who work for a firm called Rentaghost.

Among the team of phantoms were the medieval court jester Timothy Claypole; Miss Popov, a sneezy ghost; a Scottish witch, Hazel the McWitch; and a pantomime horse called Dobbin.

In 2006, Rentaghost was revived on the stage by the comic and I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! winner Joe Pasquale, who produced and co-wrote a musical version that toured the UK.

Worzel Gummidge was adapted from a series of children's books by ITV into a live-action TV series that ran for over 30 episodes from 1979 to 1981.

The show featured a scarecrow, played by the former Doctor Who Jon Pertwee, with interchangeable heads for thinking, dancing, and working.

Worzel Gummidge also featured the actor Una Stubbs as the scarecrow's love interest – an Aunt Sally doll with bright pink cheeks and a tendency to move like a robot.

"In spite of being an American, it has always been my intent to get both iconic shows back to the UK for a revival, but at the same time confident that today's worldwide kids' audience will embrace their reintroductions as well," Pidgeon said.

What do you mean? Why wouldn't it work? They worked the first time round.

Personally I found Worzel to be turgid at times - and only liked it when he put his thinking head on.

Rentaghost would be a fun show to revive. I always had a mad crush on Mr Claypole.

In fact I still do.

Just because they can doesn't mean they should. I'm fed up of Hollywood and TV execs raping my childhood.

Ghostbusters, Rentaghost & Worzel Gummidge all in one week. Confused

Question - Nigel Pickard of RDF - is this the same person who was head of children at TVS and created many a great programme including the ressurection of How?

If this is the case then I am hoping he is the right person to make these deals as he knows children's television and what children watch has NOT changed drastically (especially to what ITV and BBC say) over the last 30 years.

If Blue Peter can last 50 years, and have loing running children's drama - with the periodical remakes of classic dramas such as the Phoenix and The carpet and Stig of the Dump and the numerous remodels of Basil and Sooty then I believe these could be hits if marketed correctly.

Just because we have to go cap in hand to US independents means nothing if they are hits here and worldwide. How many years did the UK have to go cap in hand to US with regards to sci-fi and CGI (although most were based over here!!!!!) and how many years (and in some cases) do we go cap in hand for helping in more serious drama's and docmentaries? HBO co-pro's, WGBH (Boston) co-pro's, Discovery Channel co-pro's. Plus it has happened in the past with children's - the remake of The Tomorrow People, which was a relative hit over here, was co-produced by Thames and Nickeoldeon.

Good luck to all concerned and lets hope they do reach our screens again.

I think you just took hyperbole to a new level.

You're older now. You won't be watching these shows anyway.

Let the young 'uns enjoy Rentaghost the way we did. Its a great show.

Indeed Gavin it WAS a great show. However as much as I would like this to work today, the PC world that we live in may provide a few obstacles. Still, there's certainly no harm in trying it out and it would be nice to see a piece of my childhood burst back onto screen for a whole new generation to enjoy.

Not sure about Worzel Gummidge though. Ok, kids today'll love it but those who remember first time round will probably not enjoy as much as Worzel Gummidge WAS Jon Pertwee and Aunt sally WAS Una Stubbs. I don't think anyone can do better!

I'm not sure I recall anything questionable about the content myself, unless you think the RSPCA will get upset about a pantomine horse Wink
