Reminiscing The Big Breakfast

Has any footage ever surfaced of the original rival pilot to The Big Breakfast, which IIRC was made by Central? May have been more but think was it was narrowed down to two who made live pilots broadcast to C4 execs at the same time and they basically turned the other one off after 20 minutes or so.

IIRC Michael Grade told that story in his Radio 2 documentary On the Box, they had two TVs showing each pilot.

I think he's told it a few times.

It was the day after Channel 4 announced the relaunch with the 'interesting' pairing of Rick Adams and Sharron Davies. It was in all the tabloids the next day, and Chris was running through them in a link and mentioned the new presenter partnership and said something along the lines of "hey, I know I'm now on the radio against them, but I still love the show - but what on earth are they doing hiring Sharron Davies - are they going to turn it into a sports show?"

I remember when it fell off the air for about half an hour in 1995, they ended up showing a bit of the standby emergency tape which included clips of the Evans era, and someone phoned him up to tell him he was back on The Big Breakfast, but the one I most remember was in the summer of 1996, as Dan McGrath was married to Lisa Clark, the incoming Big Breakfast editor, and Evans said that they'd reveal "exactly what's going on with The Big Breakfast", and Clark came on the phone to talk about what the revamp was going to be like and was adamant that Zoe would be staying, which of course she didn't. I faithfully noted it all down in my diary.

This is possibly a bit OT for this thread, but of course 20 years later, Evans hired Lisa Clark as the executive producer of his Top Gear reboot but she left before the show went on air. This was one of the ‘troubles’ that beset that production, sadly, and it meant that the aforementioned Dan McGrath piled into Evans on social media and it turned the ‘old team’ against Evans once again, with their relationships presumably already being strained from the 2001 ‘firing’ incident.

It’s funny that 20 years on from Radio 1 and the Big Breakfast, and 15 years on from the Virgin Radio incidents, these people kept interlocking - of course, John Revell also stuck his head above the parapet and was extremely anti-Evans in the press at this point too.

Interesting that the clip on Loose Women was credited to Screen Ocean, which seems to have a collection of archive clips and episodes from the show. Most need purchasing but quite a few for free, including this one with the 1998 World Cup Titles leading into the Find Me a Model episode featuring Tom Hardy.

And also from Find Me a Model 1998 a clip I hadn't seen before - Kelly Brook, working for Men & Motors, going behind the scenes and interviewing Melanie Sykes.

A nice montage of the 97/98 break stings accompanied by what sounds like the original summer 97 closing theme? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btjFR_D2FrU

These stings were re-rendered in 1998. In 1997 there was a more definite border around the logo whereas it's more of a washed out glow effect in these. Also there's more of a white vignette on these later versions.

Looking on that page, Screen Ocean's address is Channel 4's headquarters in Horseferry Road- are they something to do with Channel 4? Would explain why they have Big Breakfast footage.

Isn't ScreenOcean Channel 4's archive company? Same as ITN Source do for ITV?

Some of the dates are wrong in the description though. There’s an episode that says 5th October 1992 but the actual date on the clock says February 1993.

Watching the show I posted above in full - god, I miss this show. Just brilliant, and so much going on. Also rather timely that they were marking the 50th Anniversary of the NHS that week.

From a presentation point of view didn't realise the 1996 look for the news lasted so long - still being used in the summer of 1998, even though it really didn't fit in with anything else.

I’ve just watched that show too. I don’t remember those purple animated weather graphics at all.

I love when the Friday song starts those photographers at the front of the audience look so confused to what’s going on!

Only has the first half of the show though... I presume the second half must have been on a different tape, so screen ocean treat it as a separate item.
