They ended on a cliffhanger on the previous series to give them a better chance of being recommisioned for a fourth - and it worked. However the fourth series had bad ratings which meant the final 3 episodes were shown a year later in a teatime/early evening slot. The cliffhanger was never explained because the BBC didn't want it anymore. Sad really, would have been nice to have an explanation to what happened.
