What a shame RND seems to be a shadow of its former self. Though I do think it hasn't been any good for the past ten years really.

Do you mean a) the last ten consecutive years (odd and even numbered), back as far as 2008, of which we only had RND in 2017, 2015, 2013, 2011 and 2009 or b) the last ten odd-numbered years which featured RND one Friday in March (2017, 2015, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2007, 2005, 2003 and 1999)?

If you're going to broadcast for seven hours... you need to have 'must see' material to keep the viewers in. ... I'd rather them do two or three hours of quality television

A good point there, I've noticed that over the years they've tended to repeat some of the sketches from the early part of the evening after midnight. Perhaps the show is too long. They could limit it to just 19:00 to 22:00, but perhaps that would be a little too short. Perhaps the best compromise would be 19:00 to 22:00 on BBC One, then a break for the news (with no filler on BBC Two), and 22:40 to midnight on BBC One. That would be just 4 hours 20 minutes.

Bear in mind 19:00 to 21:00 (watershed) should be family friendly material, and you could have 12A rated material from 21:00 to 22:00. 15 or 18 rated material should be limited to the 22:40 to midnight slot.

Post-watershed is when much of the donations come in - axing it would be stupid. They kind of changed the structure this year anyway - 7-10pm was a telethon in a traditional sense then later was segmented into different slots - or that's how it was scheduled at least. For the first time in years I barely watched it on the night - just a bit before the football and a bit after The Last Leg.

They took a gamble this year, it seems it didn't pay off (literally too, the total was down), but these things happen. From what I recall two years ago we were full of praise for the event at the Palladium.

I'm increasingly convinced TT knows what he's doing. Surely he can't be so dense to not realise he's being insulted in all these posts he gives kudos to?

It was a total car crash but because of that much more interesting to watch imo. Unlike the past few years, which have been instantly forgettable, RND2017 is going to be one you'll remember even if it is for all the wrong reasons. The people proclaiming it to be the worst thing ever broadcast are the people who complain Children In Need is exactly the same year in year out. At least they tried to do something different. I'm sure next year they'll go back to playing it safe again.

It's all for charity and rightly an incredible amount of money was raised, but the main purpose of the telethon is to be an entertainment programme. I'm a bit put out by those who seem to consider that because it's for a good cause, the telethon itself should be immune to criticism.

Yes they tried to do something different but didn't do it very well. The venue was totally wrong with an audience constantly chatting away, making you feel as though a better party was happening behind the camera. Acoustics were bad, and the audience were completely dead, not helped by the choice of acts before the watershed. Toast of London in particular completely died on its arse, which is incredible considering the original show didn't have an audience anyway, but the inclusion of audience who weren't laughing somehow made it all the more painful to sit through.

The night was summed up by Lenny Henry actually telling the audience to shut up, a sentence I'm sure will appear in a history book in the distant future.

And the two aren't separate either really. Many of us who've grown up with Comic Relief donate largely because of what we remember from the telethons over the years - if the show itself becomes less entertaining and gets less viewers over the years ultimately it will hit the donations.

I wonder if Sport Relief will go down the same path next year?

Please don't be so rude to Tumble Tower. He's been on here for years and only occasionally posts nowadays. He enjoys RND, CiN and Eurovision and usually posts enthusiastically about all three. The fact that he chose not to watch this year, I think, speaks volumes.

It's like what happened with the British Comedy Awards. It got smaller and smaller as the mainstream comedy hits dried up and the BBC2/Channel 4 hits struggled to reach 1m..

On the subject of the British Comedy Awards, after Channel 4 axed it, the producer said that they were in talks with another broadcaster. The link to the press release which is still on the website is entitled "exciting news for the BCA's".

I'm guessing those talks never got anywhere, and they never found another broadcaster.

I'm surprised Dave never snapped them up. Would've had a great home there.

Can't imagine it being quite the same event on Daves budget

Actually I'm pretty sure for the last few RNDs he hasn't had much good to say about them.
