So Series X will follow on from BtE which in turn followed on from the mythical series IX?
Mind you, I was one of the few who liked the last series (8?) and I can't remember what happened at the end, they never really cleared up what happened at the end of 7 did they?
Well the Nanos rebuilt the ship at the end of series 7; that was the point of episodes Back in the Red I and II.
In the end they have to enter a parallel universe to find something to prevent the decay of Red Dwarf

Series IX is both the cancelled BBC series, and the fictional series mentioned during Back to Earth.
Also during an interview on Dave's website when promoting BtE, Doug did jokingly say that if they were to get a new series, they'd consider doing Series X but never do Series IX.

Series VIII ended with Rimmer kicking Death in the balls after the rest of the crew went into the mirror universe.
Doug has said that the new series will, at times, fill in plot gaps between VIII and X [allowing some of the IX mythology to be true, Kryten lying about Kochanski etc] via discussion and possible flashbacks. Although when being asked which Rimmer was in Back to Earth, Series I or VIII, Doug replied "take the fifth"... so by the looks of it, the hard light Rimmer which replaced Ace in VII has come back at some point.
