Along with previous whispers from cast members about two new series being made for Dave, Doug Naylor himself has confirmed on Twitter that:

Expecting some Red Dwarf news sometime in the next couple of weeks.

So thought I'd start the thread for when news starts coming out officially.

Previous news includes Craig Charles speaking about it on his radio show:

Chris Barrie confirmed the news in an interview:

And Bobby did his usual blurting on Twitter before being allowed:

Top stuff - also didn't know Doug had joined Twitter (I should check G&T more often!)

G&T should be getting busy again over the coming weeks/months so it's worth getting back into the site yeah.

Doug's current twitter discussion is whether the next series should be back with a studio audience or not.

In my opinion, while a studio audience improves the performances on set, it's going to make all the plots appear online months in advance. Something old Dwarf never had obviously.

It should definitely have a laugh track. Programmes without it seem very slow paced and makes one feel bored.

I just hope to dog they make it a "real" one - either with a live studio audience (though that would limit the production) or one recorded from an audience watching the actual episode.

If you've ever had the misfortune to see Life of Riley, you'll know how completely canned laughter can utterly ruin a sitcom.

I might be in a minority, but I think the style of Back to Earth (no audience track) Is the best way to move forward In Modern Dwarf. I think especially with the DAVE budget and time constraints, an audience version of the show would end up looking cheap. Also while traditional sitcoms are still around, I think new viewers will have trouble watching a science fiction comedy presented in a traditional sitcom format with a laugh track.

Plus I like the more dramatic Dwarf style of Back to Earth. They tried it in Series 7 and I don't think it worked, but with BtE I feel it worked very well.

Well the recorded audience route is obviously how they went about Series VII, which allowed 4 wall sets, but a genuine laughter track to be used. I'd personally go for that route... die hard Dwarf fans [which I usually include myself, hence the username] wont like it compared to a live audience of course, but it will help keep the plots secret for far longer.

I'm sure they can also manage to make the timings work better this time around. The problem they had with recording VII was not allowing room for laughter to be inserted between lines, I doubt they'd make the same mistake twice.

The extended versions of Series 7 have very obvious laughter gaps - in some instances the audience found the jokes a lot funnier than the producers were clearly expecting, but .. what can you do, eh!

As far as I'm aware, the 'Xtended' VII releases didn't have audience tracks because they weren't shown to audiences?

But yes in standard episodes they did speak in documentaries of having to edit the tracks down as they began to drown out new dialogue.

Yeah that's right. Only the already-cut episodes of Series 7 were shown to the preview audience without the full audio dub. Some of these episodes had their plots tweaked slightly though, and one or two lines were removed prior to broadcast.

Took a bit longer than a few weeks, but news on the new six-part series has been confirmed:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/news/a286062/red-dwarf-exec-confirms-new-series.html

Quote:
"Latest word is that the deals are being done and... they’ll be in a position to start prepping before the end of the year. But I think it's just one series of six episodes… right now."

And when discussing the Red Dwarf Movie:

Quote:
"The film script was great, though, and I really hope it gets released one day. It was a reboot... so most of what was great about it wouldn't adapt easily to the TV series. But it’d make a knockout graphic novel."

Sorry to p*ss on your flame....

From Doug Naylors Twitter:

According to Digital Spy: 'Red Dwarf Exec confirms new series.' Not true - sorry.

It might actually be a done deal, but Doug Naylor is right to be cautious, as he has had nothing but bad experiences with commissioners promising a lot and giving little.
