As songs go in and out of peoples minds, what they should do is have a record of the month, with a song of the month being chosen. Or conduct a webvote or something to make it more spread than the TV audience at that time.
Then in december (the saturday before new year, at the end of the year, and including december's songs) the 12 acts perform and the normal format goes ahead. Therefore we would have a wide selection. And every artist should perform live.

I think it was so unfair that westlife won with a cover, miming. Where as Daniel Beddingfield sang a song that he wrote himself, 100% live, in a performance that would never be repeated. The thing that got to me though was the fact that westlife can perform live as they did on the all new TOTP last week, but why didn't they last night? If they can, they should be forced or pushed out of the competition.

Missed most of ‘record of the year’ last night, but watching it on ITV2 now. I do not like Westlife and I hate the song 'Mandy'. The only on I can remotely stomach is 'Bop Bop baby’ or whatever it is, and I don’t think Westlife would have won if Will Young was there.

Anyway, as long as that BOY Gareth Gates did not get a chance of winning this year so that’s one good thing!!

Im not fussed on Westlife's songs either, yeah Bop Bop Baby is OK though - the only one I like is Mark, all of the others are ugly Laughing

Is Gethin Jones one of the two guys on S4C's "Uned 5"?

Yeah thats right, he certainly used to be on Uned 5, not sure if he is now as I dont watch it, he works for S4C on other progs I think, I think it was him who was batchelor of the year or something earlier this year Confused:

I think next year they need to change the format, still keep the regions in it, but instead of giving points, give the actual number of votes received. Its daft that the smallest ITV region (Channel) have as much say as the biggest ones, Central and London. That would give a more accurate results as atm Channel and the smaller regions have as much say as the bigger regions even though the population of Central for example is 9 million.

Didn't That guy in the Tyne Tees region used to be in that boy band I can't remember their name but I think one of their songs was Stand Tough.

That would be Point Break.

Ooh I remember at college making a mock of Smash Hits, which included a poster special of Point Break, featuring some rather sexy shots I stole off their website.

Anyway...

I think it was agreed amongst quite a few that this year was sort of a fix, allowing that stupid song of westlifes to be entered was beyond belief.
In my opinion i would have rather seen daniel or black eye whatever they're called than them or that weird busted 'we're too cool for you' s*** pop c*** Evil or Very Mad
They want more a thoro selection process for this next year so we don't see a repeat of what happened this year. Exclamation
Maybe it would have been better if it was a fix. Wink

And yet again, UTV use somebody not linked to the station in any way - Suzanne Cowey - who ironically, hosts a local travel programme on BBC ONE Northern Ireland Smile

Just did a search and he's still there, and he did win the Company award - there's some pictures there - http://www.uned5.co.uk/dev/lluniau_eng.asp

Just as we're discussing how Mandy actually made it into the Record of The Year to start with, what makes a record qualify? Does it have to have been a number one? How many weeks? How many records sold etc.? And how come If You're not the one (Number one in Dec 2002) was up against Mandy (Number one in Dec 2003)? Shouldn't Westlife's song have been up for nomination next year?
