when beeb world goes on eurobird it will be encryted. all you have to do is find the code that breaks the encryption. i have never done this or know how to do it but i just thought i would let you know. i would not recommend doing it either unless you know it is safe. i only suggest this because BBC World is not a subscription channel. IT IS ILLEGAL TO BREAK SUBSCRIPTION CHANNELS ENCRYPTION.

Woh! Dodgy territory there! As David well pointed out, it is illegal to do that and easy to trace so I wouldn't recommend it. I'm afraid the only [legal] way to do it is to point the dish at Hotbird but out of interest:
If the people at World/ITC know that it's technically available by pointing at Hotbird, why purposely have it encrypted on Eurobird and not FTA through 'Other Channels' facility?
Also and similarly with ITV, when BBC World tests, will it be *instantly* encrypted or will the jolly nice people at the Beeb let us see it for a few days?
And when is it going on Eurobird? Will BBC employees with DSat be given the card?
Cheers, Asa

Why, if you want BBC World in the UK, is it so expensive? I think it's a disgrace that people would actually pay the BBC that amount of money!
Out of interest, does anyone know if anyone pays the BBC to get BBC World?
And is there any special network you would need to receive it? When I say network, I mean Sky, on digital, etc.

Technically it is not a UK broadcast channel and BBC Worldwide does not broadcast it here. The BBC operates under royal charter therefore no adverts due to the licence fee. BBC World is funded by advertisements so is not allowed to broadcast under the name of BBC in the UK. I think it is the ITC that prevent it being broadcast here. You can of course pay for the privilige of recieving it but you have to buy the broadcasting rights to do so which amounts to £64. They could of course change the name to world news or something or just add it to the uktv network but that would not make sense.

Well if one did want to pay, how would they go about it, do you contact the Beeb or something?
I would pay, if BBC World was in widescreen!
I for one hope that BBC World won't be encrypted, plus it wouldn't make sense either since it dosen't have much viewers such as Euronews, so it would be silly.
The BBC hardly will get into trouble, if we can watch it via other channels simply because it's only anoraks that know about the other channels facility!

Precisely, but if it continued to be FTA (after those long tests of course
) in the UK, the lawyers and ITC may have something to say!

Sometime soon (hopefully) BBC World is going on Eurobird, which Sky digi boxes can pick up. The trouble is, the service (unlike on Hotbird) will be encrypted, so the only way to watch it would be if BBC World ran 'tests' on Eurobird just to check the feed is working etc.. etc.. and we'd be able to pick it up via 'Other Channels'. Very hopeful mind!

I seriously hope it won't be encrypted, if anything BBC World still need an audience in Europe, so I don't see the point why they need to encrypt.
At the end of the day, out of 5 million Sky subscribers, I estimate that probably in the whole of the UK, 200 people use the 'Other Channels' faciity!
