Really Bad DOGs

Which TV channels have the worst onscreen logos? (April 2014)

Over the years, DOGs have been something we've had to put up with quite some time now, especially since multi-channel TV arrived. While some of them are fairly small and translucent, and for the most part, aren't too obtrusive, some are downright awful. The garish bright pink DOG used on BBC Three is obtrusive to some extent, and some would say it's among the worst of the current crop of DOGs, even though it might not be around for much longer.

There are worse DOGs around than that. Much worse. Not just really bad DOGs as the title of the thread goes, but really, REALLY bad DOGs. Some are so bad they can make a channel unwatchable. What's your view? Which DOGs shouldn't just be put to sleep, but taken round the back of the house and shot?!? In my view, some of the worst offenders are the Asian language channels among the 800's on pretty much any Sky box.

I would actually argue that DOGs have become significantly less obtrusive over the years. Sky, of all people, are leading the way with only have their DOGs on screen for a few seconds. The BBC's DOGs are now out of the way in the 16:9 safe area, and even BBC Three's pink DOG is translucent now. Channels also don't seem as inclined to have huge permanent onscreen full colour logos for special events either.

I have noticed that Sky Living seems to keep its DOG on throughout most shows, while Sky1 takes it off after a few seconds. BBC Four's DOG is virtually unnoticeable most of the time, and while BBC Three's DOG has been toned down since it first went pink, the pink colour is still quite garish and unpleasant.

This is about DOGs in general, including the ones on channels some of us on this forum might not see on a regular basis, if at all. As I said in my OP, the Asian language channel DOGs are among the worst. HUM is one such channel. Its DOG is a huge, opaque, multi-coloured animated one. Although the channel's content is perhaps entertaining to its regular viewers, how can they not be put off by its DOG? That, for me at least, would make any channel totally unwatchable.

While perhaps most of the channels we watch have toned down their DOGs to more acceptable levels in recent years, are there any other channels you've seen (not just the Asian language ones) that have such massively obtrusive DOGs?

I'd like to nominate this monstrosity from CITV's Old Skool Weekend from 2013:

I didn't understand why that was so big. Compare that to the current CITV dog, and it's ridiculous.

As much as I love Daybreak the on screen graphics are crap, they need to be in this topic.

Is it just me that thinks it's a bit of a dull subject which has been done to death?

The only ones I really object to are the Music channels. Viva insists on having the programme title burned on screen permanently at a jaunty angle. A bit distracting and over the top when they're showing films, particularly those with a long title ("So I Married An Axe Murderer" springs to mind). 4Music can be a bit loud too, especially that animation that takes up literally the whole of the screen.

But yeah, it's not like I wouldn't watch a programme because of the DOG; which just about says it all.

Surely the real crime with Viva's graphics are that they are just the old 4:3 graphics stretched to 16:9. Change your picture format to 4:3 and you'll see.

I have an abject feeling somebody designed it for 16:9 where it wouldn't have looked quite so big, then of course all the archive programmes were 4:3...

There was a huge thread about The Old Skool Weekend when it happened. We were there. It definitely happened. Didn't it?

see here for it ……..
