Download Tinra here (41kb)

This program allows you to convert Real Media (.rm) files to Windows Video (.avi)

The program has to be run through DOS and you use the command.

tinra.exe file: realfile.rm avifile.avi

The bits in bold are what you type in, the bits in italic are what you have to specify. It's best to rename any Real Media file to less than seven letters (i.e. 'Channel Five Ident Orange.rm' should really be renamed 'five.rm' first, before using this program.)

Once you have done that, it should take just under a minute (squares will appear on the screen showing progress).

Then you can see the uncompressed AVI file (with higher quality than Real Media).

If you've had success with this program (either using my Real Media files or others) or failures, please let me know here.

Some of you may download TV Home's files as '.RAM' files. Rename them first to '.RM' before using Tinra.

I haven't converted because when I tried the file shows up us being 0 bytes and I don't get squares on my screen. What do you play AVI files in - Windows Media Player?

Please help!!!

Rob, here's a few things to check.

You can also run Tinra through the Windows Start Menu 'Run' feature.

Simply type the following (where Tinra.exe is in the c:tinra folder!)

c:tinratinra.exe file:whatever.rm whatever.avi

Include the word 'file:' and make sure that the file you have downloaded, ends in '.RM' and not '.RA' or '.RAM'

My PC is set up so that I upload my files onto TV Home as .rm but it downloads them as .ram - This is likely to be the main cause of the problem. Oh, and check that the Real Media file is in the same directory as Tinra.exe!

Cheers,
Asa

Also, how do you change a .ram into a .rm, as I think this is the problem.

I use Windows Media Player

Well, you don't need to rename the file, simply specify its .ram in Tinra. i.e.

c:tinratinra.exe file:whatever. ram whatever.avi

Glad it's worked Rob but no need - this weekend's second update (oh yes!) will include balloonless versions so no need to send them. Thanks anyway and enjoy the program!

Have a look at the How To Capture page at TV Home. To edit AVIs, use a program called VirtualDub, and to change them back to RealMedia, use the free RealProducer (available from www.real.com)
