"Passes"?

I hate it too. "Dies", "passes away" OK but passes - Yuk! American rubbish

Or a less harsher way to announce death? I don't see the problem.

It’s an increasing euphemism in this country. I think Americans in particular seem to shy away from saying directly that someone has died. I personally hate it. People die, they don’t pass.

Tabloid newspapers just go in for the kill, literally on the headline - "Fred Smith, star of The Wobbly Window show, dead" (sometimes with age, sometimes without). I consider that more tasteless than anything.

Or maybe the submitter just accidentally a word.

"Fred Smith, star of The Wobbly Window show, dead"

Was that a Channel 5 show?

One of the coarsest I've heard was Peter Sissons reporting on the death of Ernie Wise. While most would say something like, "Ernie Wise, best known as one half of the countries most popular double acts, has died at the age of 73," Sissons simply opened with "Ernie Wise has died."

But I'm getting a bit off topic.

Didn't think my choice of words would be the cause of debate. I just thought passes was a gentle way. Better than "kicking the bucket" or has snuffed it"

Having met Galton and Simpson, I'm sure Ray would have preferred "snuffed it".
