For those ident fans out there who are worried that BBC2 have ditched some idents because they're rarely shown - fear not! I for one was concerned if I would ever see The Big Read ident again. However, when Dean's in control, you can never be too sure. I was very pleased when he treated us to The Big Read at the N24 handover at 1:15am. This ident was the one with just six 2s, not the one with thousands which I sadly miss.

Still no sign of fire though!

It's the Network Director who's in control, and it is is (s)he who selects the symbols - if they chose to make a change from the one which has been placed during the scheduling process.

Funny you say that, I was going to post about that this morning. I think someone at BBC Two has realised that the current idents are crap and they need a wee bit of variety. Hopefully they'll make new normal idents instead of just comedy ones aswell.

Here is a capture of the closedown, if anybody wants it.

If you look at all of the idents that BBC TWO have it makes you wonder why it's always the same ones that are used. There are 26 normal idents (including both long and short versions), there's the 3 or 4 Big Read idents (I'm not sure if there's a Big Read Crowd Long and Short), there's the 3 new comedy idents, there's 2 withdrawn idents (Fish Original) and there's the 2 BBC FOUR on BBC TWO idents. There is also Snowman and Ice Cube which have had showings outside of Christmas time as well.

Surely Big Read could be used for pretty much any programme especially news (reading the news) or ceefax.
Fire could be used for cooking programmes, dramas or quiz shows.
Morris Dancing could be used for comedy.
All though these are just suggestions it still highlights the fact that most idents could be used for most programming with the obvious exceptions like Morris Dancing into say The New Al-Qaeda documentary on Monday night.

I wonder if we will suddenly see the above come true like the time when Ice Cube was suggested for hot weather on the forum and then a week or so later it appeared Wink

There were BBC THREE on TWO idents as well. Did you include that weird BBC4 ident that is only used on BBC2? It has BBC4 branding and is nothing like the usual BBC4 or BBC2 idents, I think it also has the BBC4 slogan written at the bottom. I havn't seen it in ages though.

Could someone post a cap of this "wierd" BBC4 ident please? I'd love to see it.

I forgot about the BBC THREE on BBC TWO - well that's another 2 - and I didn't realise there was another BBC FOUR ident shown on BBC TWO. I'd be interested in seeing that if someone has a copy please.

If I can find it, it's on a tape somwhere I'm sure. It's not that weird really, I can't remember exactly what it involves.

It's in this file, along with a couple of other bits that were in the same junction.

Yes, it's a common misconception that the Network Announcer has overall control of the output. These days, even their mic is only live in certain circumstances (even in breakdown situations, there are times when the network announcer cannot apoligise even if they wanted to as their mic isn't in circuit!). On Network, the director is in control of the output. In the Nations, the announcer is also directing, so they can have an effect on what symbols are used. Similarly in English regions, although there are very few junctions under their control, the programme directors for, say, Look North are in control of what symbol is used. The English regions are supposed to use the same symbol that network use (probably so that if they don't opt out on time it doesn't look quite so bad).
