amongst other things, Alldays, and The Cooperative Bank (and Smile.co.uk, which is handy if you're after an ethical online bank)

well yes, technically they are limited, owned by the members of the society.

co-operative group (CWS) sold most of the alldays outside of their trading area (the north of england) to respective co-op societies around the country.

A Kwik Save near me became a Somerfield Essentials. Has this happened at a store near you because I thought Somerfield were keeping the Kwik Save brand?

Put The Telly On
When I was born we had a Gateway which was renamed Somerfield in 1994 then moved premises and is currently Waitrose.

Although since the pictures were taken, the 'Every Little Helps' plastered across the front has had to be peeled off - because the local ASDA complained the letters were 'too big'.

That sounds odd. Is there a maximum permitted size of lettering?

I'm guessing here that ASDA may have complained to the Local Planning Authority that the Tesco store had effectively created a huge advertisement on their building - which would require Advertisement Consent (like any shop signage or large advert panel). It would then be down to the local council to decide if the size and appearance of the lettering was harmful to the amenity of the area or appearance of the building - if they refused consent, Tesco would be required to peel the letters off.

I think they are reviewing all the stores to match the "customer profile" of the area - if they can make more profit from an "essentials" operation than a discount one in your area they'll ditch the Kwik Save fascia. So you must be in a posh area Smile

The one I'm thinking of is in the inner city of Bradford just opposite a large Morrisons, so not exactly posh!

Perhaps Morrisons attracts the Kwik Save crowd leaving a gap in the market for the people who'll want to nip into an express style shop instead? The programme about Tesco on BBC2 at 7pm was quite interesting tonight and gave some good background to this whole topic! (There - another TV link).

Used to have a really nasty vile ASDA in my home town, but that's being demolished now.

We now have one of the flat pack aircraft hangars with lime green lettering.

Strange really - they built it in January as an ASDA, and now they seem to be rebranding as an ASDA WAL*MART.

We must be in a posh area as our Kwik Save closed down, though there is a Somerfield right near it, it also closed down at the same time as when Sainsburys Local was opening too. They also closed down another Kwik Save in Warrington, but this was due to the contracts within the building it was in, which has now been demolished.

I live in an area where without Kwik Save (or Morrisons for that fact) human life would not be possible - We used to have about four within a four mile radius, but one closed down - to become a NETTO store - Class! Embarassed

We don't have a Netto, we have 3 Asda's, 1 Sainsburys, 1 Tesco Extra, 1 Morrisons, 2 Lidl's and 2 Aldi's. Though at my end of Warrington the nearest big supermarket for us is Morrisons.
