I assume it's two combined into one, but the way it was set up made it look fairly long and narrow. Seemed to be a considerable gap too between the stage and main audience seats.

It's at Fountain, so the run is slightly shorter as they need to be out in time to hand it over to Britain's Got Talent at the end of May.

I guess BBC Resources couldn't fit it in at TC1 because of the up and coming Election in 5 weeks!

That's an interesting point - is TC1 sat idle waiting for the election now? Or would BBC Resources take bookings on a provisional basis, that they may be cancelled/moved to a smaller studio when the election date is known?

Forgive me if it's an obvious answer, but the studio being used at Fountains is the same studio (two combined into one) that X Factor uses?

Yes, Fountain has two studios (A & B) which are each 6,500sq ft. Each has separate cyc rails, wallboxes, galleries etc. They are seperated by a huge soundproof door which, when raised, means the space is re-configured into a 13,000 sq ft studio. The door is only lowered once a year for maintainance purposes as far as I know. And, yes, it's the same space that The X Factor uses.

However, The X Factor uses the studio almost the bursting point. I.e: the set, staging and seating go right up to the firelanes all the way round the studio. Together with some very clever lighting it manages to make the space look a lot bigger than it actually is.

With the Over the Rainbow set-up there is a lot of space still unused around the edge. I've heard rumours that the set used on Saturday was not actually the final set being used for the live shows though - an interesting one to watch.

Fountain has also been built to be more long and narrow than TC1. Looking from above on Google Maps shows this.

I agree, the space between the staging and the main block of seating is quite large. I think it's because they're accommodating for the 3 ped cams, a Technocrane on stage left (which takes up a lot of room), a Jimmy Jib on stage right as well as a Stedi-Cam rig all in that space.

would I be right in thinking the jimmy jib is the one like a see-saw where the operator sits on one end
that is what they use on the soaps a lot

Not quite, a Jimmy Jib is a type of camera crane of fixed length but it has no need for an operator to be 'sat up' with the camera. Instead, all of the operation of the camera head is done remotely, using servo motors and LANC remote contols, by the operator who is stood on the ground. The Jib op is responsible for swinging the arm as well as focussing, panning/tilting and zooming the camera. All of this is done by using remote controls on two handels at the end of the crane arm. The op also has programme and preview monitors for their reference. See below:

Fountain also use a Technocrane, which is similar in appearance to a Jib but has a telescopic crane arm which makes a huge difference to the types of shots which can be obtained. This is controlled by 4 people usually. 1 person in charge of pan/tilt and zoom and the arm itself is sat behind the staging somewhere. 2 people swinging the arm and 1 focus puller sat next to the Technocrane itself. Again, see below:

Just goes to show how clever the X Factor set was in making the same space look twice the size
