That "discovered" Palladium show has been doing the rounds for years in pres circles...in fact there's a screengrab of the ATV in-vision shown before it on Transdiffusion's fine site

I wonder if somebody decided to just send the Tiswas clip in when they'd just bought it off e-bay, or got it in a fan tape-swap? It didn't look like a first generation recording, although it could've been early VHS. The fact that it was cropped and zoomed didn't help though. I also thought they knew all about the stuff on e-bay, so Chris Tarrent's claim that there were only 10 in existence is odd.

I was instrumental in sending in those clips, and they are actually of a much higher quality than you saw on the show. On the Tiswas website we were contacted by TyneTees (or Granada Newcastle as they now refer to themselves) about the show, and we put our heads together to think of clips which usually don't see the light of day in this sort of thing.

One of our group is Matthew Butler who appeared on Tiswas back in the day as the 'Bright Eyes' singing rabbit. He recorded every show he was on, most of which are now officially 'wiped'. I borrowed his tapes a while ago to make DVD safety copies. The original quality is amongst the best I've ever seen from VHS, particularly since it was recorded over 25 years ago.

It was a copy of a couple of these DVDs that we chose clips from and sent to Tyne Tees. What Tyne Tees received from us were effectively excellent quality, 2nd generation off-air recordings. However it seems that they then decided to de-interlace ('filmise') them to try and mask any VHS artefacts (of which ironically there were vitually none) and thereby make them look as if they were old tapes from someone's own collection (which they indeed are... but don't look it!). I promise you that the true quality of these shows are so much better than you saw on the show.

CT does know that there are probably many more episodes of Tiswas in existance, but his '10 episodes' claim probably comes from the official figures for complete programmes still held on their original master tapes. Remember most of the live shows weren't recorded by ATV in the first place.

Don't worry, ITV know what we've got (as well as certain other members of the Tiswas team themselves!!), and there's a heck of a lot more than you might think... although not much from before 1979. The quality of what we have is so much better than what you might get on ebay (don't touch them on there, you can trade for 'free' on the Tiswas site).

BTW Standby for the new Tiswas special that is being made... we reckon you'll see some nice clips on there... Wink

Exactly! Laughing I can never understand why they don't show the picture zoomed out (so that you can see the full picture), and simply surround it with either black bars or some other effect on the left and right side of the screen. BBC4 manage it.

Or do ITV think that their ITV viewers will get confused. Wink

Well 50 episodes of Crossroads turned up (it was big abroad) so if 50 can be found its hopeful that many other shows are still out there.
