The government is planning to sell off all of the radio frequencies that we currently use for radio mics & communications, when they switch off the analogue TV bands. The process to due to be completed by 2012, but will be starting much sooner than that.

There is at present NO sensible allowance made for radio use within our industry, and this will affect all broadcast or recorded TV, theatre, other live entertaiinment, & corporate events - indeed anywhere that currently uses a radio microphone.

The government's action is, of course, motivated entirely by raising money, and the result will be a damage to people's livelihoods as well as their enjoyment of pretty well all forms of entertainment.

Please take a moment to contribute by clicking on the following link, and please pass this on to as many people as you can. It's maybe true that two millions signatures won't sway the government on road pricing, but don't let that dissuade you - we must try!

Er, it isn't quite as clear-cut as that...

Using a digital signal would mean that the sound coming out of the speakers would only appear after the time it takes to encode, transmit and decode the signal - normally a few seconds. So there'd be a dreadful echo.

This is a very serious situation for companies who sell and hire radiomic equipment (like the one I work for), not to mention the hundreds if not thousands of small organisations who already own this very expensive equipment.

I wouldn't normally ask, but I urge all of you to sign this petition.

I've signed the petition, on the grounds that so much stuff relies on radio signals these days that it doesn't bear thinking about the consequences of the government getting its way.

On a sidenote, it was interesting to see this petition on the site...

I signed it (with difficulty - seems painfully slow at the moment). I have a few radio mics in the house and it would be pleasant to keep using them.

Some people need to realise that their home problems aren't the PM's business...

Phew! Can't have Mr. Hellfire finding that petition.

I'll sign the radio mic one though. I haven't a clue what it's all about but as Gav has asked us all everso nicely to sign i will. The only mic i'm usually familiar with is a Karaoke one down the pub when drunk.

This is potentially a very serious issue, fortunately it seems to be getting a lot of press coverage at the moment and hopefully that will mean it will never be seriously considered by the government. However the old TV band takes up a LOT of spectrum and could therefore make them a significant amount of dosh.

There's another petition I've just been sent which could be equally as damaging to the industry:

"Our friends at the Location Managers Guild of Great Britain would like you all to know that the UK Government are about to propose restrictions on photography in public places which could make street photography and documentary photography against the law.

There's a petition on the Downing St website against the Government's proposals to restrict the use of photography in public areas.

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Photography

Sign, and forward, if you are so inclined ....

There are a number of moves promoting the requirement of 'ID' cards to allow photographers to operate in a public place.

It is a fundamental right of a UK citizen to use a camera in a public place, indeed there is no right to privacy when in a public place.

These moves have developed from paranoia and only promote suspicion towards genuine people following their hobby or profession.

Many thanks"
