Weren't they going to be called something else, like Network X or something? Radio 5 would be 'Network X', and Radio 6 would be 'Network Y'.

To confirm, the five new BBC national networks are:

Radio 5 Live Sport Plus, a part-time station carrying additional sports commentary for which there isn't room on Radio 5 Live, starting 2nd Feb.

BBC (Radio) 6 Music is Network Y - album tracks and archive material - starting 11th March (reportedly).

Network X appears likely to go under that name - there is even a website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/networkx and starts late spring.

Network Z, the archive comedy and drama network, starts later in the year, and, at a guess, is likely to carry the number '7' in some form, Radio 7 Gold for example.

BBC Asian Network - an extension of the currently regional-only service, starting in the autumn.

Radio 5 Live Sports Plus has been around for a while now as a pilot service

There was at one point going to be a Radio 5 Live News plus as well - the sports one would have carried any sport when there was news on 5 Live and vice versa for the news.

The other 'new' DAB service is BBC World Service which will be broadcast across the UK properly for the first time.

My money's on it being something like BBC 6 Speech or Comedy and Drama!
Also the last I heard Network X was still a working title but it may be that no one has come up with anything better ....

i believe the asian network is based in birmingham, and uses radio WM's MW frequency, will the current version be just heard nationally, or will operations be moved to london and revamped?

Suspect the BBC Asian Network feed on DAB will be pretty similar to the service currently on BBC Digital Satellite (aka Sky Digital) channel 869.

I expect that initially the majority of listeners for the new digital radio services may come from digital satellite - given that there are approx 5 million Sky Digital receivers in the UK, and less than 100,000 DAB receivers? (AIUI all BBC Digital radio channels will be available on DSat as well as DAB - certainly there are 5 Live Sports Plus/Extra - R5LSE - and Network Y - NYR - test/barkers on the BBC transponders on Astra 2. (You have to add them and access them via add channels)

The Asian Network is actually based at Radio Leicester, although some programmes come from WM's studios - it has for quite a while now been broadcasting on a number of Midlands stations MW frequencies - as well as I think Radio Cambs and in the evening on 3CR ....
they've changed the nature of the programmes so they are more accessable wherever you are listening.

The BBC say that Network X will be a 'black music radio station'.

Also, even though Networks X, Y and Z were working titles that have been used for a few years now, it appears more and more likely that the Network X name will stay. Things still might change before launch, of course. I'm sure confusion with Xfm will be avoided. Smile

Radio Five Live Sports Extra has been around for ages on DAB, and broadcasts premiership football, F1 racing, tennis, Test Match Special, etc.

BBC World Service has also been on DAB for a while.

Network X has its own website (well, hosted by Radio 1), www.bbc.co.uk/networkx
Network Y is likely to be called BBC 6 Music.  Someone's evidently been playing around with the config files on BBCi in preparation for the new site, which is why /radio6 forwards to /6music. There's some info about it at www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/inside/digital.shtml
Network Z is in the pipeline, I've not heard too much about it though.  I don't think it's due to launch till next year.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/digitalradio/radiostations.shtml has more information on all of them.
