Okay, I listen to Radio 1 apart from Breakfast (when Radio 5 Live gets my vote), and here's what I'd do with the sinking ship...

Weekdays
04.00 Wes Butters
07.00 Colin and Edith
10.00 Scott Mills
13.00 Sara Cox
16.00 Chris Moyles (incl 15min Newsbeat at 15.45)
19.00 Zane Lowe
21.00 Jo Whiley
23.00 John Peel
01.00 Various specialist shows

Saturday
04.00 KC
07.00 Spoony
10.00 Cat Deeley & Dermot O'Leary
13.00 Trevor Nelson
15.00 Judge Jules
17.00 Pete Tong
19.00 Seb Fontaine
21.00 Fergie
23.00 Tim Westwood
01.00 Some random nobody

Sundays
04.00 KC
07.00 Spoony
10.00 Cat Deeley & Dermot O'Leary
13.00 Emma B
16.00 The UK Top 40 with Scott Mills
19.00 Dave Pearce
21.00 Sunday Surgery
23.00 The Dreem Team
01.00 Tim Westwood

This is only a temporary measure - this schedule fits in with the station's current music policy, but personally I think they should abandon the playlist (as I said earlier in the thread). Eventually I can see Sara Cox going and Colin and Edith might not be perfect (but their two week trial from tomorrow might sway people). I'd quite like to get rid of Dave Pearce too! Mark and Lard are popular, and that might make a move to 6Music even more sensible - taking some of the audience with them.

So, what do people think? Not radical enough?

I don't really think that Radio 1 is 'up itself' in terms of music policy. I'd absolutely hate it if it started playing the same sort of music as GWR, for example, where there's absolutely no sense of discovery. I don't think I've heard a single song for the first time on GWR. I have, on the other hand, heard 3 different Westlife songs in as many hours on it...!

Radio 1 provides an important service to music lovers. It's DJs are actually knowledgeable about the music they're playing - if the same is true of local radio DJs, they don't often show it. If anything, Radio 1's problem is that it's appeal is TOO broad - only someone with really eclectic taste in music will enjoy listening to it all the time. But that's no reason for it to change what it does. Surely a public service radio station should be about seeking out new talent and bringing it to a wider audience, not just playing it safe with established artists. If Radio 1 stopped doing this, the UK music industry would be much worse off as a result.

Bo!!ocks to the music industry, I pay the BBC for an entertaining radio station, not to discover new bands who are crap anyway. If they want to be all alternative and up their own arses, then they should be replaced by 6 Music, with Radio 1 being digital only.

I think that's pretty radical, actually! I'm not too keen, to be honest, although I'd definitely like to see the back of Dave Pearce. As I've said before, though, I'd hate to see Mark & Lard go and I reckon that would be suicide for the station anyway - and I can't really see Sara Cox doing very well in an afternoon slot. Cat Deeley and Dermot O'Leary might work on weekends, though...

I was thinking about the ideal replacement for Sara Cox at breakfast and, although I reckon Colin and Edith will get the show, I think I've come up with a great alternative... Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen. Tried, tested and proven in terms of on-air chemistry and suitability for that timeslot. They did wonders for the Big Breakfast, and I'm sure they'd do the same for Radio 1.

Personally, my ideal daytime schedule would be this...

04:00 Scott Mills
07:00 Johnny Vaughan & Denise Van Outen
10:00 Kevin Greening
13:00 Mark & Lard
15:00 Chris Moyles
18:00 Trevor Nelson
20:00 Colin Murray
22:00 John Peel/Various

In my personal opinion, Radio 1 is crap. The Radio 1 of today is designed for young teenagers who would classify themselves as "trendy", even though that word could be used by anyone of any age to describe themselves!

I don't see what the discussion is about anyway. If you like Radio 1, listen to it..... if you don't, then don't listen to it. It really is as simple as that. Personally, I think most radio stations are crap. Local commercial stations just have the same Top 40 playlist day in day out. And when there is MORE than one station in the same area playing the same things, well it gets very boring very quickly. In Newcastle, there is Metro who play top 40 stuff. Again, mainly intended for teens. Then there is Galaxy, who are supposed to be a dance and RnB station. Problem is both stations have the same playlists much of the time. Then we have Century, which is an adult contemporary station. Problem is, they again have the same playlist. Where is all the good music from the early 90's - the stuff I USED to listen to on Metro 11 years ago or so? It sure as hell isn't on the radio dial anymore. I suppose Magic 1152 is OK some of the time, but that's on MW so the audio quality is absolutely sh*te.

Basically, radio is crap. I've got a lovely MiniDisc player in the car for my enjoyment of the music I LIKE. I don't have to listen to the likes of some numb skull radio presenter followed by a track which has already been played like 50 times that day, and is probably being played on another local station at the same bloody time!

Why have you dragged up an old thread from last year when there's a perfectly good, more recent thread on Radio 1 on the front page? Rolling Eyes

There's a hell of a lot of changes to the late line-up - Vicky Marsden and Dave Pearce seem to be the only ones who've got the boot completely although virtually everything has shuffled around so it's hard to spot them all. I'm surprised that they haven't taken this opportunity to get rid of Steve Lamacq as they've been edging him out for a while. Also there's still no slot for Scott Mills when Sara Cox comes back (assuming she does) - perhaps Jo Whiley moving on too?

EDIT - Dave Pearce still gets Sundan Dance Anthems by the look of it...ironic considering that IMHO sounds more outdated than his Late Drive.

Hopefully Sara won't come back.

Steve Lamacq's Monday show is huge and often has very high profile people live. I wouldn't say they were edging him out.

Who's Vicky Marsden? Know the name but don't know when she was on.

Dance Anthems is fantastic - how could you say it was tired? It has far far more energy than late drive.
