Did anyone see the thing on Ceefax/BBCi about R1 relaunching 'cos they are losing listeners (but gaining younger listeners)? Well Whiley, Lamacq, and Mark & Lard might as well get their jackets now Sad Typical, they don't know what to do with talent/intelligence. I bet they go to doing either dance all day (like a 1xtra-lite) or voting (like The Box etc). Moylesy and Pearce might get the boot, possibly Peel, Zane and Tong... I'm too far south of the river (Bexleyheath) to get XFM on 104.9, and I like 6music, Storm and XFM on Sky but can rarely get near the telly to listen (bloody family), and I don't have DAB, so what do I do now? I like M&L and Zane but what will I listen to when R1 changes? I am not happy about this...

And one more thing - they obviously don't want anyone to complain about the changes - last night the Zipper said the R1 messageboard was down, and it's still shut now. Free speech my tailgate!

All the BBC messageboards are down, and have been for a day or so.

It's a bit early to complain about any changes when they haven't even said that there will be some changes!

this seems a bit OTT - they are not going to get rid of their entire lot.

Radio 1 has vastly improved in my eyes in recent years, it went down the road of too much dance and I hated it but I love it now.

Radio 1 is constantly reinventing itself.

15 years ago it was like Radio 2 is now. Then they had a rethink and filled it with wall-to-wall dance music, which was disastrous.

Now they're a bit half of one thing, half another, because they have some excellent DJs on during the day (Jo Whiley, Mark and Lard) who are severely constrained by having to conform to an extremely rigid playlist. It's better than in the mid-90s when the whole schedule sounded like a slightly more professional version of a bog-standard ILR station, but it still isn't "different" enough.

Mind you, as digital radio comes more and more onstream the decent stuff will probably shift to 6music and 1 will become more mainstream. Because at the moment they're like one station during the day and an utterly different one in the evening. It's very strange.

Radio 1 was meant to have a massive overhaul of it's output last October. I'm surprised it's taken this long.

Scott Mills is by far one of the best presenters on R1.

Aren't Mark and Lard the most listened to programme on Radio 1? I thought they had the highest ratings of all the DJs. It would be mad to get rid of them unless the station is completely changing direction, thus alienating the half-dozen or so listeners left... Rolling Eyes

Scott Mills is in for Mark and Lard for the next two weeks - much better than the other stand-ins, Colin and Edith.

I think R1 needs to decide whether it's going to be a populist, American-music-playing chart lover or whether it's going to break boundaries and do something to reinvent the industry (which everyone knows has had better days).

This doesn't just mean shuffling about the evening shows - they need to have the daytime, evening and weekend schedules to be singing from the same hymn sheet. At the moment, they're trying to attract kids during the day, music fans in the evening and dance fans at the weekend. They need to find some consistency - at the moment you can't like everything on the station, so won't listen to it all the time!

Too right.

I'd argue they promote "alternative" music, rather than pop/dance, purely because there isn't another national station that does it.

That might impact on their listening numbers adversely though. I think they'll probably carry on trying to be all things to all people for a few years yet...

I can't see them getting rid of Mark & Lard - it would be pretty stupid seeing as, AFAIK, they're bucking the trend and actually gaining listeners!

I actually think Radio 1 is pretty good at the moment - a decent mix of styles, both in terms of music and DJs. I hope they don't change it too much.

I really hope Chris Moyles doesn't leave. How can they even think of axeing him? He's the best DJ on Radio 1, and is loved by many. He's very funny, great to listen to, has a nice voice and is just great. They've already moved him from Breakfast and taken his Saturday Morning slot (and replaced it with the rubbish that is Colin and Eidith). They can't completely get rid of him.

As for Mark and Lard, I've no problem with them leaving.
