Closet Anorak Chris Moyles came out of the closet this morning as the show became very geeky. They were discussing whether Radio 1 via Sky and Freeview was DAB or FM. Aled said it was FM but they didn't agree. They then went on to talk about compression levels and all sorts of technical stuff.

This was at 8am at the heart of peaktime, you wouldn't get that Scott Mills

More geeky anoraky stuff with Chris Moyles this morning

Chris was playing with the emergancy jingles they have in case there is a major breaking news story in the middle of a recorded show. So basically loads of DJs saying 'This is Radio 1'. Then later more stuff about how long you have to be silent for the emergency tape to kick in.

Listen again online at bbc.co.uk/radio1, it's from about 8.10am until just after the 8.30am News or you can download it on the Unofficial Moyles website

On a different note, am i right in thinking the first hour (0400-0500) of early breakfast is always recorded?

Yes, that's correct. I'm fairly certain 5pm - 5.45pm is too.

Very geekish but very funny, particually Dom's reaction when he thought the emergence tape had kicked in. Classic! and then during the news at 8.30 having to explain that R1 was not having probs.

The emergency jingles sounded very funny and I'm certain I've only ever heard one about 5 years ago.

Right I'm off back to my closet, anyone care to join me?

You can hear the joins where it's been edited together. Bit of a radio geek observation.

Why on Earth would 5-5.45pm be pre-recorded?? Especially as it leads into Newsbeat surely it needs to be live in case a major story breaks?

"My Tunes" is voice tracked everyday.

"Your Call" isn't exactly pre-recorded.
The calls that are put to air aren't always live and are on a short delay (to prevent swearing etc.) There is no point in 5-5:45 being pre-recorded especially since the show goes onto 7pm

Most shows don't have truely live callers anyway, especially when they're just requesting songs - the DJ's have to que up the track so they can play it before it appears the call has ended...

Obviously things like Carpark Catchphrase are live..well, as far as I'm aware!

You can tell bits of Your Call are pre-recorded (even if it's perhaps just a few minutes before) because the caller will stop speaking at a certain point in the song intro and a jingle will immiediately kick-in and hit the vocal perfectly, and this would be very difficult if it was happening there and then (and you can tell when it is live as they don't attempt to insert a jingle). It would also explain why Scott always says "it's on now", because most of the time they'd add the song in afterwards and the caller wouldn't hear anything.

Chris Moyles has taken the mickey out of this in the past - they did a spoof where he asked the called to keep talking for a bit so they could hit the vocal of the song!
