Quiz TV as a genre is becoming more and more controversial. Only recently many of the leading representatives from UK quiz TV (including ITV Play) were hauled in front of a Parliamentary Select Committee to hear and respond to MPs concerns on how calls are managed on Quiz TV. As entertaining as it might be to watch, most people wouldn’t dream of calling in, let alone calling in 50 times in the same hour. Yet there are clearly some vulnerable people out there who do and apparently ITV are weighing up their role as providing a return to their shareholders compared to their Corporate Social Responsibility. I wouldn’t blame them for closing ITV Play tomorrow, even if it is a ratings grabbing revenue winner. It just doesn’t look right…IMO

I noticed last night the 'terms' panel on screen stated "All calls charged regardless whether successful" or similar, which I think is new. I recall the Parliamentary committee pointing this out, and many present weren't aware of this.

Well, every quiz channel and/or quiz format I've seen in the last 18 months or so has stated that calls are charged whether selected or not. It usually sits on the scrolling tickers.

Correct. Quizmania has "Calls cost 75p with BT / Whether selected or not" and The Mint's ticker displays "You will be charged for every call at the on-screen rate whether you are selected to hold the line, or not."

Glad to hear that this parliamentary committee have done their research and know all the facts then! The channel/show that really was conning the public has long since gone. In other words, they got away with it before the regulatory bodies even knew they existed.
