For me as a kid at the time (and still today watching it back), the Daniels version had a much better, catchier theme and was entertaining, appealing to a family. Obviously the target audience then skewed towards an older audience for daytime, but through no fault of monkhouse I felt that it changed the feel of the programme.

Of course nowadays we have daytime quizzes moving to primetime.

I wonder which out of the teatime quizzes will finish first? Pointless or The Chase? Both have been on air for 10 years this year.

Pointless. The daytime ratings have already sunk quite a bit I believe.
I can imagine !mpossible gradually replacing it.

To be fair the monkhouse era had a cult following with students.

I'm sure I remember Bob's Wipeout at lunchtime. Probably a 12.30 slot pre Bargain Hunt.

The set design from the Daniels era would have looked incredibly dated by 1998 or 1999 - people always mention the Chain Letters set during Dave Spikey's era being out of date, that would have been similar. The design used lasted (with a few tweaks) five years without looking dated.

I don't see this mentioned usually but I feel the same about Catchphrase. The Roy Walker era set was very '80s and a new set was long overdue by 1999. That's another show that needed a refresh, but it's too bad that both of the presenters that replaced Roy Walker weren't really right for the job.

According to Genome the last time it was seen on the BBC was August Bank Holiday 2003 at 9:30am, but prior to that it was aired in a 12:30pm slot. The problem with searching for Wipeout on Genome is it pulls back Total Wipeout in the results, obviously an entirely different programme.

Speaking of Total Wipeout, this didn't quite move to daytime as such though it did use to occasionally pop up before 6pm on Saturdays but after the show ended it was shown quite regularly on the CBBC Channel which effectively demoted it to daytime albeit as reruns.

Total Wipeout being actually called Wipeout in other countries, but renamed here to prevent confusing with the Daniels/Monkhouse show.

Would 'wipeout -total' not work?

Doesn't help that most of the things they changed were done badly either. The 2000s graphics and the characters they used in the Catchphrases weren't very good at all.

Not that I think there was much wrong with the Catchphrase set myself even if it hadn't changed much since the TVS days.

One thing with ITV gameshows of the 90s and 00s though was how they made episodes then kept them on the shelves for months, sometimes years before showing them. Catchphrase was no exception, the episodes they showed in 1993-4 had been made by TVS in 1992 and there were even some 1991 episodes in that run, the later Roy Walker episodes sat on the shelves for ages (according to Wikipedia and UKGameshows, series 11 wasn't shown until after series 12! And there were long breaks between episodes in the other series too), and I think even some Nick Weir episodes weren't shown until 2004, some time after the Mark Curry ones were.

1993-1998 was a really strange period for gameshows on ITV across the board because you had stuff that had been on the air for ages and was then fiddled with (Krypton Factor), attempted to be fiddled with (Bullseye), rehash of a previous format (Strike It Lucky to Strike It Rich). Blockbusters finished and went to Sky (but was for the most part shown on ITV anyway) and then there was the CITV programmes - Finders Keepers had its format changed as well (though by that point it was Fun House in different packaging), the appearance of Crazy Cottage in which nobody had a clue what was going on (though it says here it lasted 3 series for some reason) and Steve Johnson's vehicles, even if he is only ever going to be remembered for Motormouth.

UK companies were starved of cheap, proven formats from the US during this period, as the entire industry there as good as died during the late 80s/early 90s.

It took a while for the UK companies to realign themselves to start developing their own formats.

Don’t know if Through the Keyhole has been mentioned yet. When it went to the BBC they showed it across weekdays in daytime. Although a lot preferable to the current version IMO.
