Remember that cheesy game shows like this fell out of favour in prime time around that time, due to the success of Millionaire. Every game show had to be dark and moody for a period after that. Hence these old favourites were moved to daytime, and with a move to daytime comes a reduced budget.

I feel the only reason these shows were moved to daytime, was due to Emmerdale Farm going out 5 nights a week at 7pm from around 1999. That meant there was no room for ITV Gameshows to go out at prime time anymore, as they had done for years on end before Coronation Street. I think ITV is a much poorer channel due to the lack of these types of show at this time anymore. I don't think you can solely blame Millionaire for them falling out of favour and shunting them into daytime before being axed. I think they would have worked in addition to Millionaire.
They all had their presenters changed also - Paul Hendy for Wheel of Fortune, Andy Collins for Family Fortunes, Mark Curry for Catchphrase - all pretty unknowns. No wonder they all failed!

I'd say the dominance of EE and Corrie has killed off the midweek prime time game show on ITV. Plenty have been tried over the years, but I can't think of any successful ones of the top of my head.

Daytime seems to be the new testing ground, and Tenable, The Chase and Tipping Point have been the main success stories, with plenty of failures such as Freeze Out and Babushka. I felt Cash Trapped, which did get a second series, would have worked much better in Prime Time as a weekly show.

I think a lot of them have suffered from "not being The Chase", and might have been better received in the 3pm or 4pm slots.

On the subject of moving to Daytime, The Price is Right is another (Pasquale era), if it counts as a quiz show.

The other problem is you need 25-26mins to do these gameshow. Alas itv dont have anything in a 30min slot to do that..

Wasn’t that around the same time that Telly Addicts had a complete format change which killed it off?

As the creator of the original series once told me, "the revamp killed the show, that is not sour grapes, that is a fact". It really was awful, it got rid of everything people liked about the series and didn't attract a single new viewer.

The People Versus was one of those shows that never got to establish itself in prime time before changing it to a daytime show. If anything the daytime run lasted longer than the prime time run.

The People Versus was a complete disaster in primetime, and it was really, really hyped up for weeks on end. As UKGameshows points out - http://www.ukgameshows.com/ukgs/The_People_Versus - the set was the most expensive ever made for a game show and Celador spent loads of money on it, it was so clearly supposed to be the next Millionaire, shown three nights a week in a succession of cushy slots. And it was absolutely terrible. As that piece points out, it proceeded at an absolute snail's pace, the first episode asked seven questions in half an hour, with nothing at stake at all as the money you won was safe. It was a brilliant example of a programme so in love with its concept that they forgot things had to happen in it.

Had they not spent so much money on it and promoted it so much there almost certainly wouldn't have been a second series, it was such an enormous flop. I think it's second only to Red or Black in terms of what a high profile disaster it was.

I remember in the summer of 2006, when ITV had just got rid of CITV but had nothing to put in its place, they showed absolutely everything there including episodes of Airline that were so old, one of them was about one of the staff going on The People Versus.

Do prizes not get paid out if a programme isn’t aired? They were quite big prizes, weren’t they?

There are rare cases where this isn't the case, but on the whole prizes are only paid after broadcast, which can mean a significant delay for the winner.

Is this definitely still the case today? I haven't worked on a show where the players haven't been paid immediately.

I will defer to your superior knowledge.

I imagine it wouldn’t look good for a broadcaster or production company if they didn’t honour the winnings just because the show didn’t air.

Duel was fantastic.

I wonder which out of the teatime quizzes will finish first? Pointless or The Chase? Both have been on air for 10 years this year.

I think Pointless feels pretty tired now. The BBC have also finally axed the dire Eggheads.

Co-incidentally, the BBC have commissioned a pilot of 'The Wall' an American format, which takes some gameplay cues, from this show.
Playing partner in a soundproof booth, 'stop the game' mechanic, whilst the game out front still continues, and something I'm uncomfortable with, contestants having to 'act happy/sad' before the prize money big reveal.

Isn't Danny Dyer doing that?

Must have missed that! Wouldn't surprise me, it's been tired for years. Repeats are still airing, but not in the 6pm slot.

I think Pointless only has 2-3 years left, can see Xander and/or Richard wanting to move on, and they'll leave together. Think The Chase will last a little bit longer.

I think it might depend on the contracts that were signed at the time. Shafted was 18 years ago, long enough for a pretty much complete rethink on procedures.

Millionaire of course came close to paying out out when Charles Ingram coughed his way to winning a million on the show but payment was suspended, it went to trial and ironically enough he ended up well out of pocket and I don't think he ever saw a penny of his winnings on Millionaire.

Where did you get the eggheads info from?
