The People Versus was also retooled in to a much simpler format for the same slot. I always felt that one was the best of the bunch in that slot - but I don't think ITV even screened what they had in the can.

What happens to such quiz shows that were never shown initially? Are they lost forever? Rerecorded over? For example, Shafted has 16 unaired episodes, The Crystal Maze has 3 unaired episodes from 2017, The People Versus has 2 unaired editions, 500 Questions likely has 6 more episodes to air, yet alone 300 more questions to be asked. Any ideas?

Sometimes they turn up when Challenge or whoever buys them. At least one episode of Supermarket Sweep from 2007 was never aired on ITV but went out on Challenge, possibly similar for Golden Balls too. Its unlikely they get wiped, after all there is the opportunity to flog them around the world.

500 Questions I believe they only made four episodes and showed four episodes. The Crystal Maze episodes will probably turn up on Challenge at some point as its quite likely they'll grab it if they can get it cheap enough.

Of course there are exceptions to this - Perfection for example which recorded about 28 episodes and then had to scrap the lot and do them all again due to a production error and an unfortunately placed screen (it says here).

Plus we've had the discussion before about prizes won on unaired quiz episodes - basically they don't happen, which I suppose is a real bummer if you won anything on Shafted or that other quiz show that ITV made a right song and dance about in 2004 I think it was and then didn't show any of it.

There was a lot more than one unaired Supermarket Sweep, I think it was more like 20!

Yes, there's no need for anything to be wiped anymore - the medium is inexpensive and there is still potential for future sales in some form or other. In the case of Shafted and The Colour of Money there are potentially large prizes which have not been paid out.

Incidentally, The People Versus series 2 has all now been shown (also on Challenge).

I imagine these days you could keep lower priority stuff on a lesser format, or at a lower bitrate or something rather than wipe it. The quality even then will still be a lot better than keeping it on VHS or Umatic would have been and would likely still be broadcastable if there was any interest in it.

Press Ganged (Fall 2004)
A reality television series in which members of the public crew a ship and are judged on their seafaring skills, made by Granada Productions for ITV1 in the UK. Filmed in Summer 2004, it appeared on lists of forthcoming series several times over the next year, but was never broadcast. No reason has ever been given for the show's non-appearance.

It's funny how people bemoan the move of these gameshows to a cheaper daytime format, when you consider where nearly all of the US-originated shows came from.

Minimal budget, anywhere up to 10 episodes recorded in a single day (with a break for lunch where they all got pished up and wobbled around for the afternoon eps), done in a single take with little or no editing, all standard practice. The Americans managed to do it in the 70s, so there was no excuse for the Brits not to get them right 20 years later with all the advances in tech.

Of course nowadays we have daytime quizzes moving to primetime.

I wonder which out of the teatime quizzes will finish first? Pointless or The Chase? Both have been on air for 10 years this year.

The Colour Of Money had a episode that never aired too, it got scheduled for a bank holiday in the middle of nowhere but even then was scrapped in favour of Midsummer Murders or similar!

Family Fortunes was a big shame, as Les didn't even get a proper send off due to quitting once he became aware of the changes, Family Fued still going strong over in the US! All Star Family Fortunes with Vernon was put on a 'break' a few years ago that now seems like it might be permanent, I suspect his press coverage at the time spooked ITV slightly as his 1000 Heartbeats show seemed to end at a similar time too never to be seen again!

Daytime shows don't get much worse than this effort from 2007! Bradley Walsh did the pilot too!

Pointless. The daytime ratings have already sunk quite a bit I believe.

I imagine Family Fortunes will be back in some shape or form, it'd be a good one for Channel 5 to pair with Blind Date rather than Win Your Wish List.

It remains a mystery to this day what changes Central/Carlton were proposing for Bullseye as Andrew Wood has been tight-lipped on the subject for 25 years - even my ex-colleague's husband who worked for Central had no idea. I thought the beginning of the end was when the titles were updated from the coachload of dart players to Bully rampaging through the studio. The prizes some weeks were pretty dire - even by Bullseye's standards.

I had heard that the last Family Fortunes revamp with Les Dennis was going to be the cash jackpot increasing to a significantly larger amount of £30,000 but no supplementary car or holiday for the top five answers. Les indeed heard the series was being demoted and stripped daily in a daytime slot and so he left as he feared (rightly so) it would lead to the demise of the once hugely popular series.

I could never understand why Roy Walker was apparently sacked from Catchphrase by Carlton (after producing the series for 5 years) if they wanted to completely refresh the format ... and replace him with the wooden Nick Weir. No wonder he was axed.

ITV's decision to strip soaps five nights a week was shortsighted, and it ought to be careful not to wear out the popularity of The Chase. Some old quiz/game shows are ripe for returning in their original formats, not tinkered with.

They ruined The Bill with constant tweaking and sensationalised storylines involving officers such as a the mad Supt. Tom Chandler or WPC Cathy Bradford - they should've looked at the success of Casualty which hasn't had major surgery and not changed it from an hour to thirty minutes then back again. It was a solid, popular series.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it... such a pity ITV didn't understand what that meant.

The changes made to Krypton Factor in 1995 still bemuse me to this day as to what exactly they were trying to do with that, after many years of the same successful format (without an internal advert break I hasten to add), they go off and reinvent it with gimmicks that didn't work

A number of years ago I tweeted Gordon Burns (I think the 95 final had been shown on Challenge) and said that it was so poor in comparison to the original series. Amazingly I got a reply from him stating that they begged the powers that be not to change the format of the show, but were ignored. He basically didn’t enjoy it just like everyone else.
Woodpecker and Brekkie gave kudos
