I did find it a bit odd that David Frost died the night that the first episode of the Keith Lemon version went out
Maybe the new version horrified him that much!
It actually got his and Loyd Grossman's personal blessing. I remember reading somewhere that Leigh Francis met up with them both to get their permission to bring the show back.
I suspect that if the idea was pitched after his death then it would have been a no-go.
It's a quiz, and that site also lists reality shows like I'm A Celeb and Big Brother. A very broad definition of a game show, to say the least!
Now, I wouldn’t call the likes of Big Brother or I’m a Celebrity part of this genre, although arguably Big Brother is about contestants competing for a prize!
By the same logic Only Connect fits in the same veil as University Challenge in that its not a traditional gameshow. Neither is Countdown for that matter, but that hasn't stopped it running for 37 years.
I suppose its swings and roundabouts as to what a traditional gameshow is defined as. Some of the best ones we've had are effectively variations on traditional quizzes, after all that's what most of them boil down to at the end of the day, that and a spot of luck. There are exceptions such as Crystal Maze and Fort Boyard and probably others.

For me ‘gameshow’ is an umbrella term that covers quiz shows easily. I’d also say Big Brother and I’m a Celeb are technically Gameshows but they better fit into the reality genre.
I think 'gameshow' is a contest that may or may not contain elements of a quiz, but it is not the central premise of the show. So there will be some other skill involved or largely an element of luck. Quiz shows are all about answering questions correctly.
Some gameshows you could never term 'quiz shows' ie. Crystal Maze. For example:
Quiz Shows
Millionaire
Eggheads
Only Connect
Mastermind
The Chase
Gameshows
The Price is Right
Wheel of Fortune
The Crystal Maze
Bullseye
Deal or No Deal
But a quiz is surely a game so they all fit into that umbrella term. Those quiz shows are all gameshows in my view but those gameshows are not quiz shows.
