Well, indeed, I don't understand that at all. The BBC have too few light entertainment shows that can play pre-watershed to shift one of the few that can.
There was a period when they were showing it on Wednesdays at 10.45, repeated on Fridays at 7.30, which always baffled me a bit because it was getting pretty much the same audience figures in both slots, so it seemed to be just spreading the available audience thinly.
Indeed, and as you say Sam Quek has done loads of stuff in recent years in all kinds of sports, she's stood in on The NFL Show, presented 606 on the radio and was a team captain in the ITV quiz Football Genius the other year. And as you say, sports people are naturally competitive and usually seem to have an interest in a whole range of sports, and certainly there always seems to be a mutual respect between sports stars of all kind.
There has to be something opposite Coronation Street, otherwise BBC1 would show barely anything pre-watershed at all. There are too many episodes of Corrie to just write off six slots a week, and it's hardly like it's the behemoth it was twenty or thirty years ago when it was the biggest show on telly by miles, these days it's sometimes not even the biggest show of the night. It certainly doesn't rate as high as the likes of Strictly and Bake-Off.
At the moment BBC1 are about to show Ghosts opposite it which is a high profile series for them with umpteen trailers, and they're also showing The Repair Shop opposite it which is quite often BBC1's highest rated show of the week. They've also had endless series of things like Would I Lie To You there. If they appeal to a different enough audience, which they do, then they happily co-exist and thrive there. But if you're suggesting everything opposite an ITV soap is being flung in a death slot, that is pretty much everything on pre-watershed BBC1.
A Question of Sport still does alright for what it is, happily fills some awkward slots and pretty much runs itself. But it is a fact that Sue has been presenting it for 23 years, which is almost longer than the other two hosts did it put together, Matt is the longest-serving team captain ever and Phil is the third, with just Bill Beaumont between them (and he seemed a million years old when he went), so they were all clearly going to move on sooner rather than later.
I predict they will use Peter Crouch as a team captain and change the show to a post watershed slot
I don’t understand why people feel it needs to be edgier or post-watershed? There are already edgy post-watershed shows. There is still an audience for something a bit more family-friendly.

It's a bit dismissive of Sam to say she only knows about hockey. She has been working consistently across multiple sports broadcasters over recent years so will have a wide enough knowledge for the show. Indeed even if she knew nothing that could turn into her thing - it's worked for others.
Remember too sports people are naturally competitive - they'll swot up as well.

It's in a death slot - at the same time as Coronation Street.
